Ok,
so you have a 71 AMC with a 3-bolt dampner V8, using a short water pump and an Eaton pump.

You want to swap a 1973 V8 in with it's 4-bolt balancer, and keep the Eaton pump....

can it be done?

My understanding is the pulley dimension moved between the 3-bolt and 4-bolt balancers, and that's why the water pump depth changed.

Is there a 4-bolt lower pulley that works with all the early accessories?
or maybe an Eaton Pump pulley that works with all the later accessories & later water pump?

I have some confusion because the 3-bolt dampner stayed around through 1972, when the Saginaw PS pump came out, so if the 3-bolt dampner has a different spacing from a 4-bolt,
did the 1972 Saginaw PS have a one year only pulley, or are the 3 and 4 bolt depths really the same?

Thanks

If the engines are the same cu.in. just swap the dampners with its matching pully.

Dampers are thé same distance on the mounting face for both 3 and 4 bolt style.

Since water pump had various offsets through the years. Tall pump used deeper water pump pulley than short pump, so offsets negate each other in alignment with crank pulley.

There was another thread way back that was on similar subject. And was done without any issues. Just have to remember which water pump you got in the mix for your pump pulley to match when time comes for replacement.

If you are running all of the other 73 accessories (water pump, alternator, etc) then you should be able to just space the Eaton pump forward to line up with the other pulleys.

Thanks for ALL the helpful posts Clap

I would be removing a 71' 360 to install a 73' 401.

The 73' 401 has a 4 bolt harmonic balancer, but the accessories are long gone now.

If it's possible to space out the Eaton to make everything line up (if all else fails)
would prefer to use the later, easier to find waterpump & matching pulley.

So I'll use the later setup, and space the Eaton if necessary,
 thank you guys.

Lining up Eaton P/S Pump with Stock Brackets I guess could be done somehow.
Unaware if late tall Pump had deeper Pulley, ended up on same centerline.
These are the Early Brackets you're using, right?

I put a 74 crank with a 4 bolt dampener in my 1971 304 block. I had no problems with the alignment with the stock Eaton power steering pump. Just make sure the water pump and crank pulley line up.

thank you and thank you for the last two replies!

My car is up on the lift, and I have a bunch of "organizing projects" (junk) under it right now so I can't drop it for a peek at the brackets.
As soon as I finish re-stacking parts and clear out the mess I'll verify the bracket type, but from memory Phat,
yes that does look like the setup.
