I'm sure the answer is here somewhere....
The factory pressure for the crossplies was 24psi. I have radials on there. They need a bit more pressure, as the side walls are softer. I'm running 26psi. Am I in the ball park? Ivor |

Modern radial tires generally run higher pressures both for good wear characteristics, as well as handling. As heavy as an Ambassador is, and as comparatively tiny the tires are, assuming you are running as close to the OEM size as possible, you can probably go to 34-36psi and have a much happier car, with little if any increase in ride harshness.
Never exceed the max PSI rating on the sidewall of the tire - that's for bead seating/max load purposes only. |

the tire manufacturer dictates the general pressure range, though in my experience they err on the side of soft for "nice ride". a good place to start though. "most" modern radials are fine at higher pressures than would ever have been tolerable on old bias plies!

I run about 32-4 for my non-performance 67 343 Ambassador on radials. We use it for speed limit cruising over long distances but nothing too exotic.

I run 32 all round in my 64 v8 classic mostly high speed driving because I live in a rural area.

On my Spirit which does not have OEM sized tires on it I run the fronts about 34# and the rears around 24#. They are larger than the front and carry less weight and the whole car seems happier set up that way.

This was a mostly-true statement until the whole Firestone/Ford Explorer debacle. Since that time, tire pressure recommendations - both from tire and vehicle MFGs, are much more based on what will work properly and safely over the life of the tire (i.e., science and engineering), vs what feels nice (i.e., marketing department). |
