The shifter comes out from the top as a unit. Just get under and disconnect the shift rods from the shifter arms. Then remove carpet and shift boot, take screws out of shifter "hump" and the whole thing pull out. Probably stuck to floor with sealer. A good cleaning and greasing is easy on the bench! I still have a shifter, no OD trans any more. I had visions of using it with a four speed years ago... use the lock-out lever for reverse (put three speed shifter in neutral then use lever for reverse). Would work, but modern four speeds are rail shifted (no external arms!), and of course it won't work with a five speed. I've seen a 50s Chevy truck with a column shifter hooked up to a four speed. Used a cable for revers. Said he had to work to get the shift arms the irght length, but it really freaked people out when started off in "reverse" going forward...
