The rear axle was rebuilt less than 1000 miles with new pinion gears and bearings. I also installed a new twin grip. It has developed a clunking sound on deceleration or light cruse. I assumed it was a pinion gear that needed to be set again but it is tight and I discovered I can hold one wheel and turn the other with very little effort. The manual says to check the twin grip you put a torque wrench on the spindle nut and it should take 70-200 lbs to turn it but I have one piece axles so I don't have a nut to attach it to but I can turn it by hand just by holding on to the lug nut bolts. Should it be that easy and could a faulty twin grip account for the noise?   Thanks

It is a new AMC 20 trak lock on a 70 AMX. I got from east coast gear supply. I was told this is a copy of the original twin grip. I put a torque wrench on one of the lug nuts, I know thats not going to give me an accurate reading but it should be close and it only take about 15-20 lbs to turn it so it might be my problem.

By any chance did you put synthetic gear oil in it?

Did you use Ford limited slip additive? It in a little white bottle. Very smelly once you pop open the seal. If not, it's possible your gear oil was not proper enough for your limited slip. It's too late for adding it now, if missed. Did he state it was new? If used the case may be worn, and needs another steel plate in the pack.

It sounds like the cover needs to come off and do some checking. The reason I asked is because I've seen synthetic lube be so slick the clutches wouldn't hold. Amzoil was the worst for this but since you used the proper lube, that's not your issue.

No, the thrust buttons are only on 2 piece factory units.

I doubt the ECG Trac-loc is the same as the Twin Grip. It’s lame, that’s the problem.
