Is there a way to break into the trunk if the key is lost?  Without tearing out the backseat and crawling through?

Drill it out?  Looking for the most non-abrasive option.

Thanks

I never had to tear out a back seat. But to me it is far easier to remove a back seat, than to tear out one.

If need be, the fastest way to break in is to drill out the lock.

If the trunk latch is original, you can try the ignition key and wiggle it about. Sometimes they are so worn out that all they need is a little finesse.
If you know someone with other AMC keys, likely one of them will do the job.
Otherwise a good locksmith can open it in under a minute - or your local back alley pro.

I also have an old worn out key that has most of the bumps worn smooth and a taper from front to back. I have used it to pick many trunk and door locks. Takes some finesse but in 2 minutes you will be in

I'm not sure what you are working on.  What I've done on a Machine is take the back seat out, tape together enough 3/8" extensions to reach the adjustment bolts from the back seat, and remove the bracket.  Not a big deal.
