"it seems no AMC team did much to rework the Javelin's stock suspension geometry except for lowering" I don't know where this comes from??? Somebody never bothered to read the book, the unfair advantage by Mark Donohue. Reworking AMC suspension/geometry...it's in there!

Ron,

Did you attend the How To Cheat a Trans-Am panel session?  People disclosed a few things that were rumored, and one or two I never heard before.

Also if you have film from the 1971 Lime Rock Trans-Am race, I would be interested in obtaining a copy.  I was involved with the Pontiac team.

On page 202, Donohues book, Unfair Advantage. as written,

"after days of switching back and forth, trying to find the optimum static camber, camber change curve, and steering linkage"
" We finally selected what was basically the stock suspention geometry, with the axle [meaning spindle] raised about three-fourths inch on the upright to get the chassis down where we wanted it."
"We never did get around to trying anything else on the rear suspention" "used longitudinal leaf springs with a simple panhard-rod for lateral locating." "Its simple, light, cheap"

The truth is written, stock suspention geometry front and rear on the 71 Championship Javelin. The spindle was raised 3/4 inch to lower the body.   Nothing fancy, basically stock AMC geometry with reinforced pieces...

I'm sorry I missed that , but I was dead on my feet after a week of SEMA followed by our SW Regional AMCRC meet in Las Vegas. I hope they do it again next year. LRDaum

I didn't get to go. We underwent a huge changeover in computers and programs for estimating.
What a week to choose to do it all. To say the least I'm NOT real happy with the owners of my shop!

Which guy were you? Didn't see any Donahue's there!

I met Donahue and Follmer in '73 when they were racing Formula 5000 cars at Road America. AMC had a big tent and area there with the Penske prepared Lola with the AMC engine. We ran a Parade Lap and gave the "One Finger Salute" to the Corvette Club parked along the hillLOL

Cool shot--I was 5 years old at that race--I remember some of it to this day...my dad was the GM at Buran AMC in Milwaukee and was one of the founders of the AMCCC

This is one of his projects...

I hope Ronnie Kaplan was invited, (notice his name on the front fender of the earlier race javelin,  I was able to get his autograph about 4 months or go or so

Ronnie Kaplan was there. He spoke after dinner about the challenges of competing with much better equipped factory teams.

This was a once in a lifetime event, not something that will be repeated every year. Last year they did a tribute for Corvettes.

Adam Carolla has two videos here, one of Dan Gurney, and another with Pete Brock and John Morton (Adam is apparently a Datsun junkie):http://www.motorator.com/videos/1056

The "How to Cheat a Trans-Am" panel went on for two hours in a jammed room with not enough fresh air, and the audience (me included) would have happily stayed for another two.  I tried to upload a photo of the panel but I got a VBScript error.  If somebody can tell me how, I will try again. Maybe I don't have permission?

The panel revealed, not always explicitly, several things we knew or suspected way back when.

Examples:  The Mustangs weren't acid dippped. They didn't need to be because the bodies were made from a special run of thin gauge sheet metal in the factory.  This is no small expense because you have to tune the stamping machines for the thickness.

The infamous black vinyl top 69 Penske Camaros were covered to hide the side effects of acid dipping. In almost a whisper during a discussion of a "120 lb helmet" left in the car make weight after a race, somebody, I think either Parnelli or George Follmer mentioned bags of shot (which could be discreetly dropped in the car at weigh-in).

I was told there will be a DVD of this event available through the museum.
