Need some help here on all the variables discussed, some nearly 10 years old.
I have a built 2004r trans (with converter) I want to.put behind a 390 (early crank). What exactly do I need to make this combo work? And who has the adapters and flexplate I need? Thanks for any help!

I'd guess you want the Bolt-In Adapter, oldamcer on here from OH I think has one to sell. But then you will also need the "Tolerance Ring" also that reduced the ID of the above adapter from TF727 Pilot Hole Size down to TH400 Pilot Hole Size, and NOVAK used to sell that "Tolerance Ring" but iirc it was a little pricey. It has a "J" Jeep part number.
Members may be tired of hearing me type this, and I have not done it, May be possible to have a competent person / shop modify / machine your GM Converter to change the Converter Pilot to the Borg Warner Auto Converter Pilot size and shape. It is the Converter Pilot size and shape that creates the fitment problem. Then a 1970 390 Borg Warner Flexplate may be able to be drilled to fit the GM Trans Converter Mounting Bolts / Nuts. Just a theoretical idea, but maybe worth looking into. This is a picture of the Bolt-In Adapter, it moves the trans back by maybe 1/2" due to the block to trans spacer piece that is required because of the bolt-in crank flange piece. Will also need longer Trans to Block Bolts, not sure what they do about the Trans Locating dowels though ? and also longer Flesplate to Crank Mounting Bolts...

What exactly holds this crankshaft adapter/spacer concentric with the crank ? Just the slop of the bolt holes and bolts ? I can't see the back side of it but I gather that there is no pilot on the adapter going into the crankshaft pilot hole ? If it is not inline perfectly it might cause all kinds of problems. tranmission front seal and bushing is the first to come to mind. To do it right use the print from Performance AM style and have the crank in a lathe.......IMO.

Unfortunately.......I am saying this from experience. I did this adapter many years ago and it didn't work out so well. With that style of adapter it didn't last 50 miles. The transmission front seal(converter snout seal) started leaking like a sieve and the bushing in the front pump of the transmission was wore bad even though it was new. I was young, dumb and didn't know any better at the time. This style adapter is just not serviceable......imo. Put your crank in a lathe, machine the hole for a sleeve of the correct inside/outside diameter of a 72 and up crank, weld it in place and you have a 72 up crank that will serve you well.
