Low band needs adjustment? I think in that type of tranny low band does reverse as well.

It's a 3 speed. AMC never used a 2 speed.
I'm not familiar with that year, but some years would start out in 2nd gear at some shifter positions.

Why would it only work when warm?

Thermal expansion allowing bands to tighten around drums better.

If you properly adjusted the band... maybe it is the servo? Something within the actuation of clamping the band around the drum not fully functional until warmed up. Have you had the tranny apart or just did routine maintenance. |

If when starting out you put the gear selector in D2 it will only shift once from 2nd to 3rd. Using D1 should give you two shifts..

This sounds like old Cruiseomatic tech to me. White dot is D2 and that located between Neutral and D1 in this location: P-R-N-[D2]-D1-LO.
Green dot is D1, the next position and this is the dual-range behavior that leads people to believe a 3spd is actually a 2spd. The D2 position is commonly thought to be DRIVE like every modern driver tries to understand. The naming convention indicates that it is in fact a drive position but cycles down no lower than 2nd gear. So the behavior is a 2nd gear launch, upshifting automatically into 3rd gear. 1st gear engages and gets cycled only in the D1 and LO position on the shifting mechanism. If this isn't the case, either your shift linkage isn't positioned correctly or you have a modern select-shift system that will only mimic these behaviors with a full manual valve body. |

could be internal leaks causing drain back inside, or worn pump that is losing capacity, in addition to heat. the little Borg Warner air cooled transmission is a fine thing, but at over 50 years old, it's allowed to complain!
the symptom that my most recently owned auto needed servicing was it got increasingly slow to go into reverse when cold, usually the first time. they lasted about 100,000 miles between full teardown/rebuilds, but i drove mine fairly hard and lots of highway and camping etc.
you should find and owners manual, or better yet, a technical service manual. auto shift patterns and behaviors in old transmissions varied a lot. there's two different early Borg Warner patterns too, one that's P R N D1 D2 L and another one with R all the way down... |
