Cool car. I built a 71 Matty wagon back in the early 80's. Similar combo. I would prob go with a 2200-2500 converter. Smaller diameter/ high stall converters build more heat.  Get a good tranny cooler and a trans temp gauge.

You plan to drag race?   Otherwise put a 11 inch converter in it. If you are going to do drag racing or street race, 8 or 9 inch converter...but will stall high...if you arent used to that...you may not like it

That performer grind cam will feel best from stock to maybe 2200 stall max IMHO. The torque curve comes on hard right from idle. It’ll be fun stoplight to stoplight with that cam, 2000 stall and 3.15 gears. No bigger than 26” tires.

You could have a transmission shop work your stock torque converter a little if you won't need a high stall converter. Had mine done and the stall increased to about 1700. I didn't want any extra heat that I didn't need or slippage while driving on the highway. I wanted something that would complement a souped-up 343 that's built for torque. I have 3.15 gears.

The stock 727 converter stalls at 1800. Stalling closer to the engine's torque peak will launch harder but cause more highway converter slippage and heating along with increased highway engine RPM.

2000-2200. I would not go over 2500.

Actual stall depends on vehicle weight, engine torque, rear gears, tire size to a degree. Stall ratings are advertised ratings at best. Just something to keep in mind. And brake stall, flash stall, true stall are all different things.

3.15 gears were stock for all 73 Matadors and Ambassadors regardless of engine. 3.54 was optional. I'd check the axle -- you could have 3.54 gears since it was a six if it was outfitted for towing. Did you drive it with the six? If it was real easy to take off you could have the 3.54...

A converter that stalls at 2300 in a lite weight car will stall a bit higher in a heavy car simply due to more resistance to get it going. So your 2300 might end up being 2400. Personally I'd stay with something advertised around 2000 -- just as Red20 suggested.

Too bad there isn't a lock-up converter made for the older trannys! Would have to be centrifugal or maybe some kind of magnetic proximity switch (or even a radio unit like the tire pressure sensors).  Centrifugal might work, but would lock in all gears if used in a drag car and would have to unlock quickly for max acceleration or might be hard on changing gears... but that could be a good thing for drag racing...
