Will a 2500 flash, 2100 stall, still pull away from stop at low rpm(1000)or less?
450-500hpish, 401, pulls Hard from 2-2500rpm-6000rpm , 727, 3:55 gear, 4800lb pickup.
Trying to buy a off the shelf budget TC.
Don't want to be slipping at 2000rpm! (45-50mph).
I know this subject has benn beat up!
Looking for some real world experience.
Thanks (building a jr version of farm truck?).
It will be quicker than it looks!

Off the shelf stall converter isnt much better than stock.
You want high stall or stock?  Not much in between

The 1 that's in it now(p.o. install?), I can power brake to 1800rpm, flash unknown?
It won't start to move truck until bout 1000rpm.(mild 360 ,300hp ish).
He had local b-grade shop rebuild tranny the year before I got it.(had receipt).
I can't imagen they used anything but stock?
It almost feels like a RV TC? With trailer behind it spins up 12-1400rpm before moving.
I may just chance it with the big motor?

I converted my Th400 to SP400, it's got a 13" Kenny Bell 2200 RPM / 4000 RPM switch pitch. That's the combo you probably want for your needs. There was a 1800 RPM / 3500 RPM switch pitch at one time. But a stock switch pitch would be very close to 1500 RPM with about 2800 / 3000 RPM stall.

I figure, with a bypass switch, you can lock it at low stall or high stall depending on use. Though the only good in having one, is the use of street gears. Most of the cars that used a switch pitch and posi had 3.34 to 3.55 gears. You would not know it, considering the drivability of the power being for the street.

If you run upon a 65 to 67 Buick SP400, all you need is a Jeep th400 adapter kit, and replace the 60's stock filter with a new version and pickup tube.

I was going to recommend the same thing. To bad you don't have a turbo 400 in it, not the one with the nailhead case and adapter, but an AMC case 400 turbo. All you have to do to the more modern case is drill the passage and install the orifice and the AMC case will take the switch pitch components no problem. Stock super turbine 300 switch pitch converters are still around and are a direct install to a switch pitch 400. Low stall is 1800 and high stall 2800. Would be perfect for you. Wire the terminal into the brake light switch to activate high stall when braked at a stop and a manual push button somewhere for high stall when you want it.

Thanks. I had a T400 in my 78 J10( son crashed). It was ok, but if the front shaft ever
comes loose(bad u-joint) it Will break the corner off the case where pan bolts.
I'm keeping my 727. Amcs used them in all cars with big engines.
Their a great tough tranny.
Still ant heard from Hughes?
May just call them when motor comes out.
Probably use as is? May have other bugs to work out?

getting a converter built for your application isn't much more than off the shelf.
i  had a FTI 3000 stall that would drive through the brakes at idle. absolutely hated it.
swapped it out for PTC 3500 stall drive fine off idle, doesn't push through the brakes.
have a very loose 3500 hughes in the rambler, that needs some RPM to get it moving, but it's not a daily driver, they built it for the car, weight, gears, n2o, engine rpm range, etc.
