I have a Torque command 8 transmission in a '69 AMX and the dipstick tube has been "massaged" in the past, prior to my owning it. It fits between the block and the firewall and it doesn't leak, so I'm okay with it. But I suspect that the dipstick itself is not correct, either the length or the markings. I'd like to get a dipstick from a '72 - '74 Javelin 727 and to that end I put an ad in the 'Wanted' section of the forum, but never really got anywhere. Barring that, can anyone tell me the length of their dipstick (insert joke here) for their '72 and up Javelin 727, and also the location of the 'fill' and 'full' marks?

Thanks in advance!

Glynn

Glynn...there are several different lengths of dipsticks to follow the different contours of the various tubes that were used on 727.  I hesitate to tell you a length, that could result in a false reading.  I have always trying to keep the tube and dipstick in pairs....I think the only way to get the correct reading would be to get measurements of known pair from what sticks out the end...and to the o-ring groove.....then you could make sure of what you have.  The Torque Flight dipstick/tube is a whole different animal then the Borg Warner Automatic....they only had one tube and dipstick is marked with ident for application.  I can get you some measurements from the last set I pulled from a 74 Matador X Coupe with 727...put it will be later in week...have Jury Duty starting tomorrow!!!

Ross,

I "inherited" this setup so I'm not sure what was used or what it's from, other than it's a 727. You bring up a good point though - how much of the dipstick should stick out past the end of the tube with the dipstick fully seated?

I remember when I had my Grand Wagoneer with 727, the dipstick and tube was much different then car.  I have some tubes, and  dipsticks, clearly 727, that are different in shape which would change the dipstick length, I have been keeping them in pairs.  I'll get you pics/dimension from known pairing.

Not sure if you are trying to stay OE stock, but if you can use an aftermarket part you could get a Lokar dip stick and tube assembly. It worked out well for my wife's 70 Javelin with the 727.

I'd prefer to stay stock - every aftermarket part I try seems to have issues. Besides, going with a Lokar, I'd still have to know what length to make it since I believe they're adjustable.

I think lokar is bendy so the stick and tube are matched to no matter how you need to bend the tube.

No cutting is needed to the stick it's self.

I just checked out the Lokar selection at Summit - $131 and the longest one for a bell housing mount I found is 26" in length, which doesn't seem very long. All the others were 12" in length, which is pretty damn short. I don't want to drill holes in the firewall to attach one of these things, so I'd still like to find out what an OEM '72 to '74 Javelin dipstick measures, if possible and if anyone has one...

Thanks,

Glynn

Glynn....here is your "answer" from known mated parts off 727 from my Matador X.  All information is with dipstick fully seated in tube:  The "ADD 1 Pint" Line is dead in the middle of o-ring groove in the tube....looking up the tube from the bottom.  The "Full Line" is .600 above the "ADD 1 Pint" Line.  That should get you where you need to be on making sure the dipstick is properly mated with the tube.

Enjoy the ride!
