Someone posted brand new flywheels for the older 401s for sale. (I'll be getting one and re-balancing it for my 290 once I sell my '03 E250)

YOu can use any flywheel with the same flange opening as a 72 crank as long as you have it match balanced to an original 401 flywheel for an externally balanced engine.

2 different cranks up to 71 had a flat crank and took a FW to fit it. 72 on up had a step crank and took a flanged FW ti fit it.
You are right it needs to be a 401 FW for a 401not a 360 FW for a 401 motor.

Will a 72&up 401  flywheel fit a 71 401's crank, early 71 .
