Owner:

Misc: Red/White   2 Different Paint Schemes

Here is the very first of the 52 Hurst Super Stock AMXs from AMC.  It is first because it is the lowest serial number, the number also shown on the parts book and paperwork sent to the NHRA as the first VIN.  For years people reported Shirley Shahan received the first car-well, she did. AMC was in a real hurry to get the cars out, especially to a name like Shahan, they made sure she got the very first car.....the first COMPLETED car. Yes, her car would be #35 by the VIN, but you don't think Hurst/AMC built the cars in order of their VINs, do you? They were all the same-#35 just happened to be the first random car completed.

In a conversation with Tom, current owner of this car, he found an interesting piece in a toy
store of all places. Remember this Johnny Lightning SCRambler?

Here is a close-up of the picture:

As you can see, it is the "American Imager" from Lakeview Rambler of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey,
raced by Ken Rose-thus the name Talitsch Rose is a connection to the driver Ken Rose!

Here is the car now:

Misc: Has front swaybar? Wonder why?-Read this from a Hemmings blog:

In 1969 AMC ordered 52 SS/AMX's from Hurst. As you may know, they were equipped with
JE Pistons displacing 12.5:1 compression and a dual-quad Edelbrock cross-ram intake. They
received special transmission gearing, Hurst shift linkage, battery in trunk, suspension
modifications and a hood scoop. They were an instant 10.70 performer in the SS/D class and
did well in the NHRA/IHRA/AHRA events.  In 1970, AMC sent the owners of each SS/AMX all
necessary parts to convert the '69 SS/AMX into a '70 SS/AMX. This included the parts
necessary to convert front grille / sheetmetal, rear tail-light assembly, dash and new 1970
VIN tags. Many owners made the conversion and showed up at the 1970 NHRA meets. By the
second NHRA meet (remember, there were only four total for the year back then), NHRA was
on to AMC's game and those that made the change were sent home. That's what happened
to the #3 car. Well, that was a lot of work for nothing so the owner pulled the engine and
placed it into a Modified class Gremlin. A SC/Rambler 390 was eventually placed in the SS/AMX
and on April 1st, 1970 (yes really, April Fools day!) the California DMV gave license and tags to
SS/AMX #3! As stated originally, the car accumulated about 70,000 street miles. In fact one old
photograph shows the car on PCH 1 with two surf boards on the roof! The car was in a local ad
in California when my friend found it. It's now in Arizona.

Best ET/MPH:

Misc: Car was ordered but never actually raced.

From Automaster: "In response to the email you sent Jack in regards to the research John Casey was the Sales Mgr not the Parts Mgr.  Automaster Motors was an American Motors Dealer from 1968-1973."

About Black Jack DuBrul: "Jack's biggest effect on Vermont racing was that he was in on the planning and building of Milton, Vermont's legendary Catamount Stadium, built to attract NASCAR and to be a sister track to Thunder Road. Jack is best known to most Vermonters as the owner of Automaster Motors in South Burlington, Vermont, and he did occasional sponsorships with area drivers for some years. Name: George Warren

Driver: George Warren

Best ET/MPH: 10.9

Location:  GA

Misc: George drove to Hurst and picked up the car direct from the facility.

From Robert McCorkle, original owner of hurst SS/AMX Car #17

"There's a guy from Alabama who no one probably knows - his name is George Warren. I think he had the #6 SS/AMX - George won the Division 3 NHRA Championship at least 3 years in a row - don't know how many he actually won - if Randy were alive, he could tell you all about him - George was inducted into the Georgia Motorsports Hall of Fame - I think (when talking to him) that he has dementia, but the last time I did talk to him, he had just gotten back from a Florida Dragrace that he had soundly beaten the field - what makes this so noteworthy is that George is 77 years young. Hmmm, maybe I have a few years left driving(at 66)."

Thanks,

Robert M

Hurst SS/AMX #9

VIN: A9M397X213568

Dash Number:

Original Color:

Selling Dealer: Dick Allen Motors

                       830 So. La Brea

                       Inglewood, CA

9-1

Name: The Big Menace

Owner: Dick Allen Motors

Driver:

Best ET/MPH:

Sponsor: Dick Allen Motors

Location: CA

Misc: Converted to 70.

Hi Tom
When we raced The Big Menace it was RW&B with gold leaf lettering used for the name on the doors and white lettering on the blue quarter panels that had the owner/sponsor name "Dick Allen Motors". "Inglewood".  We raced at Lions, Irwindale, Orange County, Carlsbad and even at Porterville where they raced on the airport runway. The car was converted to a 70 (no idea on the 70 Vin.#) but sadly the car was never finished. The dealership was sold and I don't know what happened to The Big Menace after that.

Here is the building today:

From Dennis Allen, son of Dick Allen:

"This photo is of the front lot of my fathers dealership in Inglewood California. We had several AMC race cars there for verious reasons. We had cleared the front lot to take the shot

The cars from left to right are as follows:

1) The car on the car hauler is Charlie Brown driven by Corke Booze. I think it ran Super Stock class. (He was in town for a big race). the car is actually from Robert's Rambler in Oakland, sponsor of Hurst SS/AMX car #47 the Blue Stinger. Note the Robert's Rambler logo on the door of the ramp truck.

2) The AMX on the trailer is one of the Breedlove AMX's. I don't know if this is the one that I now own. (We had pulled it out of a flooded Breedlove shop and brought it to the dealership to clean the mud out of it).

3) The next car is the later R,W,B Grant Rebel funny car. (In town for a big race).

4) The black Javelin was called The Pointed Stick. It belonged to Bill Hohman, who worked for my dad and who's father also owned an AMC dealership (Hohman and Craft). My dad sponsered The Pointed Stick. As you can see, no engine. (We were building a new engine for the car).

Anyone have any info or pics on this car?

5) The RWB Javelin is one of the Speed Spectacular Javelins. (Also pulled out of a flooded Breedlove shop).

6) The 67 Rouge on the far right is the first car we started racing. The car was called The Menace.

"My dads dealership also had a 68 Javelin called Cathup that we used for bracket racing, and we had one of the original 52 Super Stock AMX's. It was called The Big Menace. At the time this photo was taken the Super Stock AMX, and Catchup were in the performance shop being worked on for the big weekend.

Dennis"

I am having a difficult time posting this to the SS/AMX section.  Could it be moved and replace the one that is on there for the cars 0-15?  thanks

Here the Breedlove nose is removed and it is in 70 configuration, with Breedlove roof spoiler.

Nose will find it's way back on the car as it is today. The car also ran as a Gasser with injection.

There were a couple of different hood designs for the Aero kit.

From Dennis Allen:

"No Breedlove AMX 600 "aerodynamx" kits were ever sold to any dealers, like the Barris cars in the Dec.68 article it was a concept to pitch the design to AMC. In fact only two kits were ever made. One is on Bruce Nottingham's Hurst SS/AMX, the other is on my car which I bought from Craig Breedlove in 74/75?

Bruce Nottingham use to work for Breedlove in the 60s/70s. He bought his Hurst SS/AMX from my father's AMC dealership in Inglewood CA. His car was originally called, "Trippin The Lights Fantastic", and was run here on the west coast."

Here are some pics of the Breedlove car still owned by Dennis. The car was purchased when he worked for Edelbrock off a consignment lot many years ago (1975?). The owner of the used car lot called Craig Breedlove and he came out and sold the car personally:

The Aerodynamix was a body kit that was going to be sold to AMC dealers, and was developed by Bill Moore and AMrecord setter Craig Breedlove, who had 108 speed records with a 68 AMX. At just under $700 the program never became a reality because a trash truck driver accidently took the molds and destroyed them.
