I have a 64 ambassador that came with some non original wheels and tires. I realize this may be a dumb question, but what’s the best tire size to go with to try and get back to stock look? I see it’s a 14” wheel from the technical manual, but wondering what’s the best modern tire model size to use.

I’m working on getting some original hub caps this winter, I’m not sure if they’ll snap on these current wheels. Again, not a mechanical guy, just a guy who likes old cars so I apologize if I’m asking a totally dumb question.

Sounds dumb but keep an eye out for fleet level ford rangers with steel rims. They should be the same bolt pattern and look pretty stock with hubcaps on them. Just take one of your caps with you and make sure it will lock on to the rim.

If you're looking for a stock appearance I would think 14" x 6" steel wheels with 215/75R14 tires would do the trick.  Get whitewalls if you can find them and full disc wheelcovers.

This - exactly.  Hankook is making the most reputable whitewall radial tire right now that doesn't cost a million bucks.  nice 1/2"-5/8" wide stripe looks OEM too.  The tire model is called "Optimo H724"  I have them on my Concord, and works great.   The 205/75R14 is perhaps closer to the OEM tire width, but the 215 gives you 10mm more width on the road which does help with handling and braking.

I'm running the Optima 215/R75 14s white walls  on my 67 Ambassador with many miles of happy driving. They're on stock wheels.  I use it as a frequent long distance cruiser.

Factory rims were 14"x5".

Factory tires were 750-14, load range B (4-ply rating).

Thank you very much for the info. I’m looking to get the original wheel covers, and now I have the tire size for the whitewalls and steel wheel. Perfect.

You're welcome. Those are a bias ply tire size with a 90-series aspect ratio. That means very tall but very skinny. The highest aspect ratio you can get in radials is 75-series, so they will be wider given the same height. The skinniest radial you can get that has the proper diameter is P225/75R14 ad that size is getting hard to find. P215/75R14 is more common and is close enough. Both sizes are awfully wide for the skinny original rims and will probably also rub on parts of the suspension.

If you want radials, you might want to look into wider rims. Later AMC's came with 14x5.5" and eventually 14x6" rims that will work better with wide modern radials.

Or you keep using bias ply tires and drive the car like it was originally engineered to drive and be driven. That is what I do with my cars.

Uuhhh not stock. Not AMC at all. Probably 14"x6" or 14"x7" if not even wider.
