Discovered about 2:30 using a bright light and small mirror that I do have a brand new shiny aluminum/plastic AMC gear set in my engine...Thanks for all the advice....

I have a 1971 AMC V8 that was rebuilt about 25 years ago and has been used just a few hours since...I know the engine was gone thru, but back at that time the original timing gear sets with the plastic teeth were plentiful and cheap...I don't know what was used, and I have nearly everything off the front of the engine including the fuel pump....With a dental mirror could the chain and gears be seen to determine what type they are or am I just going to have to remove the timing cover to obtain some peace of mind regarding this/??/any "tricks" to determine whats in there would be great....Thankyou   Bob in Alabama

Oddly my 71 v8 was rebuilt back in the early 90s and it has metal gears. Never seen new after market plastic tooth gears on an AMC V8. Thought that was a late years factory only thing.

Since both types of sets use the same chain and crank sprocket, the trouble is you need an endoscope going down through the distrubutor hole to verify. The chain will make it impossible to ID though the fuel pump hole.

My #2 son has one and it is AMAZING.  Excellent resolution.

What Bob is saying..not to put words in anyones mouth, is he had lots of original timing gears with the plastic teeth back in the day.   plus they used to be all over the AMC Kenosha shows and available from AMC.

Bob,

You can see a lot in the fuel pump hole...if you can see the hub, only the plastic teeth gears had an Aluminum center hub...that would be a good clue, since it is so "new", it should be obvious.  Not sure if one is near you, but Harbor Freight sells a camera scope that is in-expensive and quite handy for stuff like this.
