Thats definitely not the old seal from behind. We had the engine rebuilt and all these parts were gone through so theres no seal behind there as it is now.

What is confusing peeps is the oil slinger is loose from the lack of a seal and harmonic balancer install. So when viewing, the edge of the slinger looks like it's part of the missing seal.

From what I see you will need to pull the timing cover and install a seal from behind.

Your cover looks pretty much like my 74 stamped one. Cannot see a register or lip to hold a front install seal. Both seal are the same, just how the cover is made, is what makes the difference.

Here are the two different timing covers.  They changed to the non-lip type sometime in the 80's where you can put the seal in from the front.  They both take the same seal. The seal lip should be towards the inside of the engine.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The oil slinger is in there. The seal did not fit from the inside and initially just thought maybe the seal had came wrong and I'd find the right one by the time everything went together (thinking it would install through the outside).

Now that I cant seem to find the right seal for this cover with 2.36 Outside Diameter...

Any recommendations as to which company I should buy a new cover from? 1 step forward, 2 back Angry

That cover has a factory part number.  That seal should fit.   I'd pull the cover and make sure that the outside metal part of an old seal isn't still in place.  As far as I know, all factory and aftermarket covers use that same seal.  You're missing something somewhere if the seal won't fit.

It appears the old seal is still in there, installed from the inside, only the rubber part of the seal is missing.

Pull that cover and inspect it from the inside before buying another. The OD of the hole for the seal on the inside should be larger than the hole on the outside if it's an inside mount seal. Just remember, the flat front of the seal still goes toward the front of the engine even when installed from the inside of the cover.

As far as covers... BullTear used to get them and inspect for proper gear alignment first. I don't think that's necessary any more -- there were a lot of covers floating around several years ago that were slightly off. I think the safest place to order is from a Jeep dealer, but they are repackaged Crown covers. Some idiot at Chrysler tossed the original dies shortly after the Chrysler take-over, figured they had enough in stock to take care of warranty issues, wouldn't need any more...

Almost any Jeep aftermarket parts place can get new covers, and they should be good. Crown is the ONLY current manufacturer.
