what are you guys doing for the bearing, that has the radius? the original bearing did not have the radius.... The radius lets the bearing move further down the shaft.

For the snap ring, use the lock ring pliers to spread the ring just enough to get a pick or fine flat blade screwdriver underneath it. A hook pick or 90 * pick and some patiennce and you will be able to work around it to get it off.

Once again, I really want to thank everyone for their help here.  Those lock ring pliers that Steve_P suggested really make all the difference in getting off that large lock ring that holds the 1st and 2nd gear hub.  Best $40 I've spent in a while. Can anyone give insight into how much wear is acceptable on the gear teeth, 1st and 3rd gears have some teeth that are chipped. Can these be reused? If not where is the best place to source them?

I have ordered new shifter forks, torque lock sliders and reverse idler gear (was pretty chipped as well) I'm very glad I decided to tear this trans down, in addition to some gears with chipped teeth, I found two syncros cracked, 1st gear syncro was cracked into two pieces, third had a crack through, but was still one piece.  Is this common to find?

I believe 401Matcoupe (Ross Peterson)has a bunch of used parts. Kind of need to see your parts to assess damage, but given the age of the trans and the fact they were always driven by grandma to the store lots of damage is common.

Thanks. I will try to post some pictures of the gears soon.  Though, there wasn't any grandma grocery getting happening with this transmission.  As far as I know, the previous owner, my uncle, did a lot of New York City driving with it, and would also take it to the track once in a while on the weekend.  From the look of the clutch and the bent pushrod i found in the engine, I think he beat the life out of this 343, 4 speed gremlin.

Lots of used parts here...

All parts are for 2.23 first gear trans...no cases, front bearing retainers and input shafts.

Thanks for the plug...

The snap ring pliers to get the big heavy rings off I use are Snap On...FYI.

I have heard that using the incorrect bearing in the mid plate can cause first gear to become welded to the main shaft. What is the difference in the bearing? Both bearings that came in the rebuild kit that I got are SKF 307NR.  Can anyone tell me if this bearing is correct or not and what the difference is?

The Radius on the inside of the bearing, will allow the bearing to get too close, or shift position on the shaft. The OEM has a sharp edge on the inside of the bearing.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this? Or is the only option to get the correct bearing? Does anyone know where to get the correct one?
