Can someone tell me please what transmission I have. I have been told three different gear ratios and would like to know for sure what this is.

The main case has the numbers; T10P-1B and below in small letters what appears to be P1968

The tail case has: T10P-7A  and in small letters under P 2168?

The Little tag attached to a bolt on the case reads: 3193964  & AS1-T104

I tried Identifying this on Planet Houston but it does not make sense to me.

Thanks in advance

look on the input shaft there will be groves cut into it, 5 groves is 2:23 close ratio, 4 groves would be 2:43 wide ratio, 3 groves would be 2:64 ratio, the tag is only a series part number.

Thanks Ed. I thought the numbers dictated the gear ration and whether it was a close ratio or a wide ratio? Is there a close ratio and wide ratio in both of those gear ratios?

Mel,

The only absolutely sure way to tell the first gear ratio is to mark the input and output shafts, put it in first gear, and turn the input shaft until you have one revolution on the output shaft.  I'll clean the end of the output shaft and use a piece of tape so I can keep track of both the front and rear end from the front (input).

According to "Performance American Style" there are two gear ratios for the 2.64 and 2.43 transmissions, a "P' series 2.43 and a "T" series 2.64 which are listed as production.  Then there is an "S" series 2.43 and a "W" series 2.64 which are listed as aftermarket.  So if this publication is correct, there are two gear ratios for these two first gear ratios.

Thanks Roger. I will give it a try. Sounds confusing on stock and after market gears.

Hope all is well up north.

Moe....Do not go by the rings in the input shaft.....Borg Warner made a mistake at some point and made 2.23 input shaft with both 5 and 3 grooves, that can give you a false indication of the ratio,  Made this mistake myself and when I worked in  a Trans Shop in early 1980's, the owner warned me of this since he had a Service Letter from BW warning shops to count the teeth on the input shaft and before ordering a replacement.

But as Roger suggests above put in 1st gear and count the input rotations compared to 1 output turn.....there is 3 different factory gear ratios.  2.64 (rare), 2.43 (very rare) and 2.23 most common and used from mid 1968 thru 1974.  Yes, BW made other T-10 first gear ratio's, but they were 99.9% for other brands.  This is not hard.
Don't worry about the after market gear markings or ratio's, your case dates indicate it would be highly unlikely you would run into these.

So true.  I've been looking for a input shaft for the 2.43 production transmission (21 tooth) and if they are out there, I can't find one.

Had 2:64 transmissions sold all of them. been coming across 2:43 and 2:23 transmissions now and then finding mostly at large swap meets most non AMC people have them and don't know what they go to and sell them cheap. The transmission parts are a little harder to find but some guys take the transmissions apart and can't put back together again and sell cheap again. Have 4 or 5 of each left may find more.
