If you want something strong and you have a formed steel bellhousing (like Lakewood) you can run a Doug Nash or Richmond 5 speed. It's not a direct bolt-in! You will need to drill the bellhousing and then weld in some 2" X 2" X 1/2" (or your choice) plates that have been drilled and tapped to accept the trans mounting bolts. You will also need to modify the center of trans crossmember. The shifter will sit little bit further back from stock.

This is the Doug Nash 5 speed in my 70 AMX.

Lots of people want that (deep T-10) scattershield,

you could sell it, and run a short one (6cyl/Jeep depth) with a Top Loader, or get a new scattershield that takes GM transmissions.

When we had our T-10 rebuilt in 2011, the man who did the work said, "If this fails, consider another option for a transmission." Why? Because the parts that your are describing are very rare! I fully understand your concern. God luck with what you decide.

Put some variation of a modern 5 speed in it, & don't look back. This is the 21st century after all.

Best mod I ever made to a car was putting a 5 speed in it.

Agree with Scott, I did the same thing, replaced the BW auto with a BW T5. Changed the car completely. So much more fun to drive.

In fact it's so much fun, that I'm now thinking of a 6 speed manual.
