    Posted: Dec/05/2016 at 9:55pm
I Have a 73 AMX that has the regular rear end (non Twin Grip).
I just pulled a good twin grip out of my 68 parts Javelin today.  Aren't these the same rear ends basically from 68-74 Javelins?  The parts interchange book I have shows that the 3rd member is different from 68 & 69 compared to 71-74. I am confused now.

I would like to put the entire rear end from my 68 Javelin into the 73 AMX.  Will I have any issues if I make this swap?

I'm no expert on newer jav / amx. I know the earlier housing is shorter compared to later.but I believe people use them.wider tires in back too!

Hmmm...  I did not measure either of these to see if they are different. I will have to do that but doing a visual they both looked the same to me.

Wouldn't you know it!  What year was the twin grip that I bought from you Jim? I was going to put that one in my 70 Javelin.

Now I am going to be on the hunt for a 71-74 complete twin grip with hopefully a 3.54 .

Looks like I have an extra early model one now to sell or trade.

If the spring perches are in the same spots, I'd use it if you're not doing a correct restoration. You can cover up that 3/4" on each side with the right wheels.

Have a 70 AMX rear in my 73 Jav.  Did that swap back in 1989. Bolt in no mods. Was also able firt my 275/60-15 Hoosiers with no problem.

I measured the rear ends very carefully and the 68 Jav SST is 58 1/2" from outside of flange to outside of flange BUT...  after measuring the 73 AMX three times it is 61 1/2". Making up three inches might be noticeable.

I think I will be on the hunt for a complete 71-74 twin grip rear end. This is a really clean PC car and I was going to keep it original.  Darn!

I have been told that I can take the whole trac lock carrier from the 68 and place it in the 73 and that I will need to use the center button from the 73. I was told I will need to replace pinion and side bearings along with a reshim.  The differential pinion and axle seals need replaced obviously.

Looks like a rebuild to me.

The center thrust button from a 73 will not fit in the 68 power lock. If yo are going to keep the ring and pinion from the 73 diff in it and only put the power lock in it there is no reason to remove the pinion unles the bearings make noise or rough. You can switch the ring gear and shim it to the same backlash and be good to go. unless there are currently diff problems.
