When tooling around in my '73 Javelin with T-10. MSD ignition, 291-C heads, Performer intake, unknown cam and a Holley double pumper of some sort, I get no smell of gas. When I decide to mash the throttle and go through the gears a fast as I can, I get a raw fuel smell inside the car. When I stop I can not see or smell where it is coming from. It does not do it all of the time and if memory serves me correctly it only happens on very hot days. The fuel pump is the second one I got from Summit. the first one stopped working after about 2-3 hours, maybe, of run time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ah, had the same issue with the Motorcraft 2bbl on my 73 304. The carb was in need of a rebuild, but I had my eyes on a performance 4bbl setup. Once I swapped out with new. No gas smell ever!

I can't remember where the gas tank vent is on the 73 model, but I had a similar issue with my 70 Javelin. It was due to the gas tank vent sending fumes into the trunk area. No gas smell until I accelerated hard and the gas would go to the back of the tank and send fumes (and if the tank was full raw gas) into the trunk and fill the car with gas fumes. Once I covered the factory hole where the tank would vent in the trunk area, it completely fixed it. It may be something else, but at least it gives you another thing to check out.

One time in my 69 AMX I did not put the fuel cap on correctly. I would get fumes when I punched it. A friend behind me flagged me down and told me every time I punched it gas would come out the tank.

The 2 bbl on my 304 was leaking gas at the accelerator pump, which I guess is quite common on the Autolite 2 bbls. Rebuild kit was cheap and took about an hour, start to finish. Probably longer with a 4 bbl. Got the rebuild kit at O'Reilly's.

Update: I fired up the Javelin yesterday. I let it warm up for about five minutes and then slowly started out the driveway. I didn't get 100 feet when I started to smell gas really strong. I drove another 300 feet and it got worse. I popped the hood and saw gas spraying out of the rear of the carb. I backed the car into my drive and looked again but it was not spraying. I found the rear fuel line into the carb loose and the bolts that hold the rear plate of the carb all loose. I fired the engine up again and took it for a run around the block and I smelled no gas nor did I see any when I looked. Hopefully this was the cause all along. I will mash on it on a hot day to be sure this was the cause.

Close call for sure.
Have you changed your fuel hoses yet? If there is a chance your running 15% or above ethanol, that would explain the hose leak. The gasket and loose bolts not so much unless the internals of the carburetor are heavily corroded or it was rebuilt with the butyl coated gaskets that were on the market a decade or more ago.

All the gas hose on the car was replaced when the car was put back together which was in December of 2015. I have been running gas with no ethanol for two years now. I will double check them. The leak was definitely coming from the top back of the carb and it was intermittent. It was spraying out in a fine stream when I first popped the hood but when I got back to the garage , the car was still running, I looked to try and pin point the leak, it had stopped. I will be keeping an eye and a nose on it.
