My 69 232 every once in a while has a single lifter that does not pump up and it ticks away like crazy for a minute before it calms down...and when it calms down it is a sudden change from tick to null.
This has happened say 3 times since July for your reference. Anybody have a suggestion as to a remedy? If I put a new lifter in there i'm afraid of damaging the lobe. Thanks, Dave

How many miles on the engine? My brothers 88 GW had a lifter that spit it's guts up and I put a new one in the engine which had 120,000 miles, and have not had a problem in over 7 years.

Dave I take it this happens when you first start it? Does it happen hot and cold or after sitting for a time and how long is that time? Has the motor had good oil changes thru out it's life? Could be gunk plugging it up? Running a cleaner thru it could help or hurt it so it's your call. What weight oil & filter you running? What is the oil psi like when this happens & stops?
Sorry for all the questions may put more light on it for others.

Happens in the morning cold engine. Like i said it has only happened three times since I bought it in July.
Don't have any history on the car prior except that it's clean and original 80k miles and I changed the oil when I got it home..it was clean. I run 10-30 with a purolator filter. I'm on the second change now as I drain every 2k miles. The car does not have an oil psi gauge so I don't know psi but you can hear it's only one lifter. Just wondering if I put in a set of lifters will it wipe out my cam..you hear stories both ways.

At next change maybe try a different filter if yours does not have the anti drain back valve and 10-40 to see if that makes a difference.
As for the lifters I hear you can do new lifters with old cam. You would treat it like a new cam, break in lube on cam & lifters and I would run zink additive to the oil. I do the additive to all my AMCs why risk it.

I don't think you can change a lifter without pulling the head, at least not on the older ones.
I would put a temporary oil pressure gauge on it to see what you've got followed by pulling the valve cover to ensure you are getting oil to the front rockers. Maybe you could see that through the filler cap hole. If it is a pre mod engine your rocker shaft could be wearing out and you are just beginning to hear the noises. There is a head bolt mod that can be done to get more oil to the rockers. |

Head comes off for sure! I'll check oil pressure but since it's only happened a couple times it not a constant low oil issue from what I can tell. Thanks guys

You don't actually need to worry about this condition. If you still have your owner's manual, it will even point out that this is a normal noise at start up. A better quality oil filer (WIX or Purolator) will reduce the frequency that it happens but it will still happen sometimes.

I agree with Matt. I wouldn't be pulling the engine apart. It should be good for another 20K or more. Just make sure it is getting oil to the top.
The head bolt they talk about is the third from the back on the passenger side. IIRC it involves machining/grinding a one inch band from the shank of the bolt down to the minor thread diameter starting 1/4" from the top of the bolt thread and up from there. |
