I was considering replacing the original style Motorola Alternator with something newer, but managed to find a rebuilt Remy unit for only 53 bucks with a warranty, no wiring changes, just a fraction of an inch longer through the case. I'm not running anything but stock lighting, no amps or stereo system. Remy number 20170 for the Motorola unit. I had a Motorcraft unit circa 1987 mocked up but didn't like anything about how it was set up. Counter guy was confused at the design of the unit and I wasn't helping him out with car I.D.! Looked it up on Rock Auto, and used their info. He thought it was for a boat....

The Motorola Alternators were used on darn near everything besides our AMC, General Aviation, Farm Tractors, fork lifts, marine....pretty much everywhere.  Some slightly different front cases for the mount and rear cases with lugs, larger and smaller pulleys, etc but the basic parts almost all interchange bearings, brushes, etc.  They shared the market with Prestolite in the 60's and early 70's.....

Interesting you say this. Been helping with some tractors recently. Was working on a '68 John Deere backhoe and the alternator on it looked familiar, it's also a Motorola!

Nothing wrong with the Motorola for a stock application. It's a tried and true design.

62 American Convertible (still worth the $50 I spent in 1973!) AMCRC #513, AMO #384

Oddly enough, I also have a Prestolite Marine alternator from one of my Dad's old boats.... I didn't even think to compare it with the factory one. I'd like to have kept the tag off the original.
