Looks to me my AMC Hornet uses a GM steering box?

Has anyone upgraded to a junkyard cheeroke fast ratio box or a 670/800 LEE/ATS fast 12.7:1 power box?
..or simply sent their stock one in to be rebuilt by LEE?

I've been reading about this myself, good upgrade at a cheap price. Regular Jeep Cherokee boxes bolt on also. I bought a 2000 Cherokee box for $40.00, from a garage up the street from me. It is 14:1, which I think will be good for my driver car, the 12.7:1 boxes are really good for autocross and quick steering applications. There are certain numbers to look for on the box, that tell which ratio they are.

Remember that the Jeep boxes
A: will have about 3 turns lock to lock as there aren't anhy steering stops built in
B: may be missing a bolt mounting boss you need. Many Jeep boxes only have 3 and if they don't match the 3 you need, well then you only have 2 and that isn't going to work out.

If you can get the right box, good.
If not, I'd recommend a box made for your AMC. Most GM 12.7-1 boxes have steering stops built in that limit turning radius and besides, they are decades old now, even the jeep boxes are working at 20yrs + or -.

I have a 12.7 box from a Grand Cherokee that the 3 bolts align and will fit my 65 Ambassador, I'm assuming it will work pretty well with that long wheel base.

I have a 73 Hornet box that is aroun 3 1/4 turns lock to lock in my 69 American and am quite happy with it. 12.7 isn't needed in many cases, depends on the car and driver etc;

So sounds like sending my current box out to be rebuilt by LEE would be best bet to keep correct turning radius

Go to www.chevelles.com and use the search for jeep steering upgrade. Very helpful and again it is a cheap way to upgrade your steering. Nothing wrong with having yours rebuilt, it will cost more, but both ways have their advantages.

Just call them and tell them what you want. They'll build it without sending yours in. I have one in my Javelin and I love it. It was a little more than getting one from AGR but those don't get the best reviews either. I've not read one bad review about Lee's.
