Got a 1970 AMX with power steering that I hate. 3 1/4 turn box that's seen better days, with a gear style pump. Would like to know what would swap in for better performance. I have a 1988 Trans Am with a 2 1/4 turn box that handles like a dream. They look the same, but will a box of that era fit ? I don't want to lose any turning radius. The rebuilders don't seem to have an answer for me. Anyone ?

The AMC steering gears are all GM/Saginaw. You will need one with 4 mounting tabs for an AMC, some have just 3 tabs. Right around 1980, they made a switch from SAE flared fittings to metric O-ring. There are fittings made to adapt, but to just bolt up, you'd need a pre-1980 steering gear. Camaro or Firebird will work. Some of the quick ratio boxes had the number "76" cast into the housing. If you have an Eaton pump (round reservoir), you could get the Saginaw pump (teardrop shape) and brackets from a later car or Jeep Wagoneer for a little more pump pressure. Bob tufcj
