Hi members started off doing disc brake conversion on 1964 American. After pulling drum seen I had worn busings and bad shocks. So decided to replaced them along with ball joints, tie rods idle and pitman arms. upon futher inspection found left coil spring broken. may as well replace trunnion bearing while I'm in there. My question is after replacing bushing (using prothane bushing) and rebuilting trunnion ( I'm sure I did it correctly) and replaced coil spring , the steering knuckle / spindle is very hard to turn has any one else ran into this problem? I mind you I haven't connected the tie rods yet. Any suggestions Thank you

They are stiff turned by hand. THe steering box applies a lot more force. If its urethane drag it's fine. If it's metal on metal, bad thrust bearing (those are usualyl bad after 50 years) thats different, and needs addressing.

Do not tighten the nut in the trunion too tight!!  It will be in a bind, change the plain nut and lock washer to a Nylon locking nut, that way you can adjust the tension properly.....

The poly trunnion bushing issues have been beat to death here. If I am not mistaken, the vertical bushings usually need to be shortened just a bit. If they are too long they will cause a bind. Also I believe Prothane started including a washer at some point that fits in the ID of the top of the poly bushing, but is slightly thicker than the flange on the poly, so the clamping force of the nut and washer is not pinching the poly flange.

PS. Just found my Prothane installation sheet. Make sure you have the top washer in place that is in the kit. That washer is #SLV-61055.

Smile First of all I want to thank all the replies once  I stuck a long screw driver thru the spindle bolt hole it turned more freely. But I did make a couple of mistakes didn't torque trunion nut to specs (should have known better) and should have put silicone around plastic cover keeping water out now to correct the issue the spring has to come back out. will do the right side the correct way and see how it feels before removing left spring thanks again every one Smile

Do you have the washer I posted about above? Make double sure the bushing does not protrude below the bottom of the trunnion casting.

You don't want to torque the nut on top to the factory spec with the Prothane bushing. That's why it was recommended that you replace the nut with a nylock nut. Tighten until it starts to get stiff to turn and stop. The factory rubber bushing required more torque since it was softer.
