Hello everyone,

My engine is back together.

I have the original starter which probably has not been used for many years.

Is there a recommended replacement for stock (Rockauto does some and based on their cost and ease of delivery abroad may be an option for me) or does anyone have advice or recommendations for a mini-starter?

Thanks in advance.

All the best
Sandy

You don't state model or motor but in the UK Jeep parts are likely more readily available. Just look for same engine and year. Jeep I6 and V8 will be the same I believe from 67 on.

For mini starter I've used a RobbMc for about 15 years. Still going strong, nice people to work with if you need advice.

I've been using RobbMc and I'm happy with it. I believe all factory starters changed in 88 when Chrysler took over production. The Chrysler starters will bolt in the same as 67-87, but you need to use a flywheel to match the starter.

Speaking of original starters, I pulled the 290 in my Javelin when I bought it and built a 360 I had in the garage for it. After TWO bad starters in a row from the parts store, I looked at the grimy old original starter still bolted to the 290 and thought heck it’s worth a shot. Long story short, it’s been on the car through 2 engines and 10,000 miles now. All I did was wipe it off with brake cleaner and a rag and bolt it in. My Optima battery and that old starter spins my 9.1:1 compression 360 at 15* initial timing with ease every time.

Other than the Bendix drive, the only other common failure is the bushing in the drive end. Cheap and easily replaced.

I have this endless nightmare with the 390FE engines in Ford pickups. One of many reasons they're now yard art. The last time I had an AMC 360 it was a high compression 10.5:1 engine and a monster. Bump the starter and it screams to life. The factory starter never needed changing, so I never did. Every Jeeper I meet has gone through this trial and it sucks. The Ford has another tier of nightmare when it comes to acquiring parts and that's too many listed. When we look for a starter on an AMC it's either the L4/L6 or V8. You get ONE style of option from multiple vendors rather than 6 different bolt patterns to mount the thing. In the end it's probably best to pick one from an old yard Jeep than the constant battle and back and forth with morons at the parts shops but speed shops are also a great idea. They're some serious $$$ but I got a DynaForce starter at a 15% discount a few years ago and can't find them anymore. Might be a great update for the Eagle when the OEM 4.0L starter finally blows(which is never).

Apologies, that was daft.

It is a 1969, 343ci 4-speed.

Thanks for all the replies.
