Yes, I'm going to leave the inner fenders, frame, etc. with the "undercoating" and all the black.
It's on pretty darned good, and has probably helped prevent damage. I can't image the work and mess to strip that off. What's left: cross member drag link stabilizer strut rod brackets all fasteners - either replace (if can find) or refinish. Will take crossmember and stabilizer to a pro for powdercoating. Not sure if draglink will fit my oven or not........ Fasteners - geesh, most of them are RUSTY. The spindle bolts are very rusty. the bolts that hold the upper control arms are supposed to be black finish - not sure if I should PC them, or attempt to find new, or paint them...... thoughts?? All other bolts are rusty, esp the crossmember, strut and other bolts. Odd, for a car with hardly any rust, the bolts are sure rusty, as were the control arms. The upper arms were pitted badly so the p-c doesn't look as nice as I'd like. I put bushings in the lower arms today, what a PAIN. Those babies were tight! I made a piece from oak to fit the arm to keep it from crushing while putting the bushings in and stripped the threads off the vice! Geesh, it felt like it was suddenly pushing in easy and I realized the vice had stripped out (I don't have a press yet) I made a "jig" to put the bushings in the upper arms and that's going well. the spring support bushings actually went in as easy as expected. Will post pics later of the upper arm bushing install process - it's something anyone can do... |

No, actually it's an old USA vice, i've just abused it. I think it dates from the 50's perhaps. Bought at a farm sale.

OK, time to torture you folks with more of my boring, taking FOREVER front-end rebuild..... Some images of the lower arms PC'd and bushings installed - don't have the right ball joint bolts yet so the lower joints aren't in:
And now for the upper arms. The first images show my trick for getting bushings in after I break a vice and have no press. A is a heavy washer, B is a bearing race (or cup as sometimes called) that fits over the rubber and pushes perfectly on the bushing flange.
![]() ![]() In this one, C is a dense block of wood with a hole cut in it to go over the bushing, D is a steel plate and E is a heavy washer since my steel plate had a rather large hole in it.
![]() This shows better how it goes together:
![]() The finished product:
![]() ![]() I did more sandblasting on the crossmember and stabilizer but wow, the humidity and I don't have water traps and so my blaster (a $149.95 special) kept plugging, and using tank after tank of sand, I finally said good enough, I'll let them finish it right and pay for it. My hair is full of sand and Yawny was getting upset.
Prepped the strut rod brackets so maybe I can powder them tomorrow depending on heat and humidity.

The only issues now - fasteners. What to do about the black bolts, nuts and those thick flat washers................

The brackets turned out almost best of all the parts. I took a lot of time in prep, and got a bit better with the powder gun, modified the baking technique. For the most part any issues you see are in the steel part itself. Only minor dust on the parts (I don't have a powder booth (yet)

Thanks. I'll be dropping off the crossmember and stabilizer bar for powdercoating tomorrow, should have it back next week.
The ONLY hang up will be fasteners, and a decision on brakes, but the brakes will be the very last thing installed right before the wheels go back on so I've got a bit of time, I guess.
The fasteners are driving me NUTS - what to do about them.........
