73 Javelin, 360 running about 377 or so HP when it was first built ten years ago - has 280H, headers, dual quad with two Edelbrock AVS2 carbs, has 2500 converter.
I swapped rear ends because - well, the differential was pretty badly rusted and was an open rear (that or it became an open at some point LOL) - running 3.15 I thought but she really winds up on the highway. Fun but in town it's sort on the edge of practical in low speed limit areas. Don't like 25-30 mph areas at all. |

I ran a 2500 with a 360, 270h cam, 2.87 gears, headers and 600 carb, it ran pretty good, but after the 9 inch w/ 3.70 gears, it really woke it up.
I always recommend a custom converter, they have always worked better for me, and don't really cost much more if you know who to talk to.

I am usually a stall converter "supporter" but man, a 401 and 4.56 Gears...
With all that grunt and gear, makes me wonder if a Stall Converter is "needed" or not...
Based on my experience with a 367 AMC, the important thing to ask and look at Whoever you may get one from, is what Percentage of Slippage is to be expected at the top end. The AMC 727 B&M 3,500 Stall Super HoleShot I got long ago had 5%-7% Slippage at the top end and that was "to be expected" or "normal" because it was an "economy" Converter. $900 - $1,000 Stall Converters do NOT do that or so I've been told, or "sold" is maybe a better word.

I paid 599 (freight included) for my last custom converter for an amc. 727, 9.5 inch, 3600 stall, billet front plate, built for my application. When you look at the off the shelf stuff, it isn't that much more expensive if any.

I’m running a Mopar Turbo Action 3500 stall converter, sort of fell in my lap at the right price and only took a few minutes to cut the ring gear off.

Came from a 383, they are internally balanced, so no issue. Some Mopar engines are externally balanced and have balance weights on the converter so you have to watch that.

For the street, I would stay with the stock converter or one that only moderately higher. If you chose one that is a high stall, it will be slipping a lot during normal driving and that creates heat, which is the enemy of your transmission. If you race, whatever it takes to win.
