i can't for the life of me get the nuts off the rear axles. they're just a retainer right? it's after i remove them that i need a hub puller? i've tried everything from penetrating oil to heat. even bought a nice impact wrench and upgraded my compressor.

i was trying to get the entire drum assembly off to facilitate reconditioning but i'm about to give up and leave the backing plates on.

big issue is going to be in the front's... i need them off so i can do my brake conversion and if they're anything like the rears and their 50+ years of not moving, this is gonna be heck

3/4 socket bar with socket and a 4 ft cheater should break them loose. The cotter pin has been removed?

I took my whole rear end to a specialized old guy's gear shop to pull mine off when I had the rear end rebuilt. They used a large press to get the hubs pressed back on

haha yeah cotter's are out.

buddy's bringing back my breaker bar tomorrow and i've already got the sched40 pipe waiting. that's my last shot, short of renting acetylene. thankfully it's not the end of the world if i can't get the rears off, it's just annoying (and scare's me in relation to the fronts.) it would SUCK to have to cut the spindles out.

Don't forget that you have to re-torque them IIRC something like 450 ft lbs

right on... not anything i can do personally, don't think my torque wrench goes that far haha

after i'm done with the brakes, suspension and linkage i plan to have a flatbed pick it up and take it to a friend's shop so he can not only go over my work (with me,) but also set the alignment and camber etc...

(needed to put that in print to make my head feel better about it lol.)

I thought the torque was 250 pound feet, but whatever.
You can estimate the torque. If you have a 4 foot bar and put 60 lbs. of force on the end of it, you have transferred 240 pound feet of torque. A 3 foot bar with 100 lbs. on the end is 300 pound feet. You get the picture. Dirty, rusty or damaged threads will give an inaccurate reading.
The fronts are not that tight and should come off easily.

Per the '65 American TSM the correct torque rating is 250 ft.lbs.

Unless you are replacing a leaking inner seal, or replacing the wheel bearing, there is no reason for you to remove the nut & hub. Especially if you are just overhauling the brakes as it sound like you are. You're going to cause yourself more grief than its worth trying to get the nut & hub off.

The front spindle nut should be little more than finger tight, it does not get torqued to 250 pound foot.

Id just leave the hubs alone. unless you have a leaking seal or a noisy bearing.
