Hi all -

Newly acquired '69 AMX. The speedometer rests at 10 mph standing still. Seems 10 mph off across the spectrum (I have not measured specifically). My guess is that the mechanism needs to be twisted clockwise (rear of speedo POV) vis-a-vis the housing or shell..

Does that sound like the solution? How do I go about that?

Thanks -

Sounds to me like the needle came loose and is now resting at 10 over.
Easiest fix is to pull the speedometer and relocate the needle.
The mechanism is fixed (located) within the housing, I don't think you can rotate it.

depending on speedo heads, there may be a stop rest. You may need to carefully place the speedo head on the pin loosely, just enough to hold in place. Allow the head to rest so that the weight of the pointer can set at rest. If it rests at 0 or on the stop pin, then you can push the head in place to secure it.

My 72 has exact same problem. Off 12 mph at rest and at all speeds, but odometer is dead-on accurate.

The speedo needle should be a simple press fit on the shaft. It should be possible to carefully rotate the pointer CCW until the needle rests at 0. IIRC there's an internal stop on the drive disc that's connected to the needle shaft. If you have the speedo out and apart it should be easy to see if there's something that's causing the drive disc not to return to it's 0 stop. The needle disc is magnetically coupled to the drive magnet that's driven by the speedo cable. There is no direct connection between the two so the speedle needle should swing freely throughout it's total range of rotation.

You should have a shop manual, but for the time being this is what you do.
1. Remove the 3 ( or it could be 4 ) phillips head screws on the underside of the plastic instrument cluster bezel / overlay.
2. Pull the bottom of the overlay toward you while tilting it up. This will allow the tabs at the top to disengage the dash structure.
3. Remove the bezel / overlay and set it aside
4. Reach under the dash and unscrew the locking collar securing the speedo cable housing to the back of the speedometer. Wiggle the cable out of the speedo and push it toward the firewall an inch or so.
5. Drape a towel or rag over the steering column so you don't scratch it and remove the 4 phillips screws holding the instrument cluster housing to the dash structure.
6. Gently pull the instrument cluster toward you to gain access to the back. Reach behind it to pull the turn signal flasher out of it's retaining clip and remove the parking brake warning light socket if your car is so equipped.
7. Wiggle the round multi wire connector plug out of the printed circuit board. Do not twist it, it plugs straight in and is keyed to only go in one way.
8. Lay the cluster face down on the towel and remove the two hex nuts on the back of the tach so you can detach the two tach wires. Don't lose the lock washers.

To get the speedo face off you have to carefully bend the metal retaining tabs back just far enough to slip the face up and out. A pair of diagonal cutters can be used to get under the tabs enough so you can bend them back as needed.

If you need to remove the entire speedometer head you will simply need to remove the two retaining screws on the back of the housing.
