Ordered a set from rockauto they don't seem to be the right ones autolite 216 is what they send plug threads seem very short anyone know what plug works with a 64 American 196.6

Autolite 437's work well.  But I will say that I think Champion N-14y's were speced for these engines and that spark plug does have a shorter reach than the Autolite 437.   In my experience (with an old Chevy) a short reach plug can lead to misfires.  Joe

You don't say if you've got the OHV 196,  or the flathead.
They use different spark plugs,  and it sounds like you got the ones a flathead needs.

Yes. the flattie does use the 216's. The OHV uses something else. Just changed the flattie's, it's 1 am, can't check the OHV engines. Hope this helps a little bit.....

IIRC the OHV 196 used a H-18Y

i run Autolite 437, or Denso 6013, in my 195.6 OHV. they are basically lawn mower spark plugs.

I'm happy with my Autolite 216s in my OHV
.060 over, 9-1 compression mild cam and weber 38 DGES rejeted

I think I used to use H-14Y. With over 70,000 miles of driving I had one fail. The outer grounding tip broke off.
