In preparation for Rockford I took the car out for a shakedown cruise, after changing out all the cooling system clamps.  On the drive the A/C quit, so I stopped to see if the compressor was running.  It was, but there was a bit of an oily mess under the hood.  At first I thought it was anti-freeze from a leaking clamp, but now I realize it's A/C compressor oil.

So... obviously something blew, but would this likely indicate a bad hose or a seal within the compressor?  I can't see any visual indications of a leak other than the oil seems to be coming from near the top of the compressor.

Cameron, the old York compressor are famous for loosing the front seal......it happened to several fresh rebuilds for me.  Are your lines originals or "new" using old fittings.  Old lines do rupture, but I would bet more on the front seal.

Thanks for the response, Ross. I had new hoses made using the old fittings.  The York was NOS, and of course the front seal would be 40+ years old.

Are these easily rebuilt, or is it just better to find another?

If I have correct compressors, I send them to Classic Auto Air for rebuild, repair....but you would never make it to Rockford, their turntimes are pretty long....getting better since last time I caught them in the middle of a facilities move.  You can buy a front seal kit and replace it by yourself if you are comfortable with that work.

Could have blown the head gasket too, especially if the unit was a tad overcharged.

Head gasket seems more likely to me as the oil was thrown around the driver's side of the pump rather than around the main shaft seal.  Could have also been the base plate gasket I suppose.

I've read that there is a pressure relief valve incorporated into the Yorks, but I can't find it anywhere. Not sure if this is a spring loaded design that resets automatically or if it's a one-time use part that needs to be replaced?

I'll go ahead and pull the compressor and replace the head and base plate gaskets.  I actually have a gasket set on hand already.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but this valve doesn't look right to me.  Comments anyone?

yep that don't look right at all... might as well replace it while your at it.

now going back a bit, when seeing that someone thought the pump blew a seal. It reminds me of Kip Adotta...

Ahhh Kip Adotta. He's from Rockford. Nice tie in for the National Convention.Thumbs Up

Back on topic, I had the same problem with several rebuilt compressors in my AMX. Front seal.  Finally gave up, never charged my system. I've been pondering trying again but I'm rethinking it now that I've seen this post. Back in the day those York compressors seemed bullet proof.

Cameron....not all York's have the pressure relief valve.....if it had one it does reset itself.  It is located on the back of the compressor main body and points straight aft.  I have never seen one on an OE AMC install up to late 1970's.
