Single-mode or multi-mode?
Are you going to be transmitting Ethernet packets or other date types?
Perhaps you'll have a fiber channel switch as well to handle your MP3s on the drive shelf?

Sorry,
Everybody has experience, time tested techniques, some good, some maybe rethinking, but if it works, just go for it.
Sum it up:
clean copper wire, no acids, rosin solder - crimp or both, must be sealed if exposed to the environment, some like to seal regardless of location.
I believe every combination has been discussed, but something new is just around the next bend in the road.

Nah, super conductors, Bloch's theorem is close, but a little tweaking and we could be there at + 200°C. Good enough for under the hood. Joints are going to be a problem though. Fiber optics has already been done.
