Welding cast iron for something that isn't stressed much isn't that difficult. Heat it with a torch until it just starts to turn a bit dull/dark red, then weld while hot. Heat it back up after welding (and if it takes a long time, during welding), then let it cool off slowly. You have to be able to clamp it in position with something before you start welding, which can be hard, as your clamp will want to move/loosen when heated. You can tack it together cold though, that usually works. Just go back over the tacks good while hot.

I put free flow manifolds on my Hornet. I used the factory V8 crossmember and motor mounts. I had to notch one of the strut rod brackets for clearance. The steering gear was never an issue. The only issue is it won't work on a column shift with original shift rod so I converted to a floor shift and have been driving the car for 25 years with no problems. Eugene

This was my original plan, however I wasn't paying attention and modified the front rather than rear of the bracket, so ended up having to go the whole hog.
Next question is how close the steering rod and steering coupling (rag joint) should be to the exhaust manifold. I've had to add a 5/16" spacer under the drivers side mount since the manifold was touching the steering coupling, I think I may have to add a bit more since it's still pretty tight. |

Couple of spacers on the drivers side mount and all is good (note this is not a factory cross member):

If you have drive angles within spec and hood clearance, then shimming from the cross member to motor mount is an easy option.
There is also the replacement of the original steering lower joint with a double u-joint or smaller diameter flex coupling.
Modifications to the strut bracket with or without reinforcement (depending on street or race use) is also on the table with much success as indicated previosly. Your build and your option to take. My personal preferred option is the double u-joint as it is easy to install, cheap, and does not effect any original drive suspension, steering or drive angle dynamics. |

Similar idea.... I've angle milled manifolds to fit before?
