This is the sealing rings and thrust washer for the rear drum. The thrust washer is the same one as is on the stator support and they are avaliable in select thicknesses for end play setting if needed. The sealing rings should fit in the groves with very little side play. They should also fit tightly in the bore they ride in. The two smaller ones have two sizes, the newer 46RE input shafts are just a little bit bigger in diameter. The bore that a shaft fits into should be smooth and free of nicks.

This is the front clutch drum seals. The original seals on the right, new seals on the left. As you can see the new inner seal is different from the old one. The base dimension is thicker on the new one. This seal fits in a groove in the drum itself. It's my understanding that some drums have this groove cut deeper than it should be. This causes problems with the inner seal sealing to the piston. I have never had a problem installing this thicker seal into a drum.

A small amount of assembly lube and the piston will slide into the drum with a slight rocking motion. This shows the drum setting on the stator support clamped in a vise. It also shows the stock location of the return springs before the retainer is installed. This drum has the intermediate band wrapped around it. Sometimes it is very glazed, with it on the stator support I can use a scotch bright pad on a die grinder to remove the glaze. Just touch the spinning pad to the drum and it will spin, and move the die grinder up and down to create a uniform pattern.

This shows the front drum clutches next the assembled front drum. The snap ring that holds the clutches in has a very slight wave to it. The waved snap ring has been known to break and fall out of this drum. I also think the drum clearance is difficult to set with this waved snap ring. The selective thickness snap rings for the rear drum also fit this drum and the thickest of them is usually a good fit. Sometimes I use two of the waved snap rings both in the same grove with good results.

After the front and rear drums are assembled including the thrust washer and input shaft sealing rings the two can be assembled together like this. They can be set aside until later.

Most 727s and 46RE transmissions have 4 clutches in both front and rear drums. Some light duty transmissions have 3 in some drums. They do this by putting a thicher pressure plate in the drum. The picture shows both plates, the standard one on the right and the thicker one on the left. The snap ring groove is in the same place you can add that 4th clutch by replacing the thick plate with a extra clutch and steel.

This is a close up of the last picture wit an extra clutch and steel stacked on the standard pressure plate to show thickness.

To take that concept one step further I sometimes machine a step in the standard pressure plate. This step is the thickness of one steel and one clutch + or _ a little depending on how the clearances are stacking up in a given drum. What this allows is for me to add an extra clutch in a drum. 5 instead of the stock 4 in most 727s. Never have had a problem with this you be the judge if you want to try it.

Next I build the pump, this is the driver I use to install the new pump bushing. Lots of times I choose not to replace some of the bushings in a given transmission but I never rebuild one without replacing the pump bushing.

The pump body has two small notches cut into it  under the bushing. They are used to stake the bushing in place after the bushing is driven into the body. There is a special tool to do this, but I don't own one so I just use a round screwdriver and hit it from the side with a hammer. Some people don't stake the new bushing in place.
