Under the rear planet is the anulas gear with a flat steel washer both splined to the output shaft. under that is the drum that the low reverse band wraps around. The drum splines into the inner race of the low roller clutch,

The reverse reaction drum locks into the inner race. This is what I consider the weak point of this transmission. The awl points to a set screw that along with the fact the outer race is splined to the case is all that holds the race in place. If enough force is applied the outer race spins in the case, if you are lucky. If you are not lucky the aluminum flange that holds the roller clutch gets ripped off the case.

This shows a roller clutch removed from the case and you can see the splines that hold it in place. Unless you are replacing the unit with a bolt in roller clutch it does not need to be removed. In a bolt in roller clutch the outer race has four holes drilled and tapped to bolt it in place.

The output shaft removes from the rear with the governor left on it. The governor support bolts to the rear of the case with four bolts. These bolts are replaced with longer bolts to bolt in a bolt in low roller clutch. Once the bolts are removed and the set screw holding the low roller clutch is loosened the race can be removed with a punch. his aluminum support is subject to damage from lack of lube flow back from the cooler. The output shaft rides directly on the inside bore. The reverse reaction drum rides directly on the outer part as it sticks through the case.

This shows the governor support removed from the case. With the reverse reaction drum fitted to it as it would be in the case. This surface is often damaged from lubrication problems caused by a plugged cooler in the radiator.

This is the governor still installed in the case, the out put shaft is for a 4x4 so it is a lot shorter than a two wheel drive output shaft. The machined surface above the governor is for a bearing to ride that is located in the transfer case adapter. In a two wheel drive tail housing there is a small plate held on with two small screws that needs to be removed. Under the plate is a snap ring that releases the support bearing.

As the picture says this is the removed intermediate servo assembly.

One would have thought finding the burnt front drum clutches we had found the no reverse problem. But it looks like this is more of a problem, I have never seen a sevo break like this before, several other ways but not like this. Look over your reverse servo carefully for cracks.

I think that covers the tear down of this 727. Does anybody have a question?

Several major differences I can tell you about are as follows. The input shaft on the right is a lockup shaft. It has a different spline count than the non lock up shaft on the right. But I can't tell you what it is, don't really matter the lock up shaft has the end machined off smooth. Besides the input shaft the lock up pump stator support and valve body's are different.
