If the cylinders are just glazed, you could try the old Borax down the carb trick.  But if it's rings that have lost their tension or excessive wear - stick a fork in it.  It's rebuildin' time!

63 and later 196s used a PCV valve. A catch can might help with one of those. I'd try an engine oil flush (Gunk makes a good one, or use a half quart of ATF and a half quart of diesel fuel). That might free up the rings if they are stuck. If it's been run hot a few times and the rings have lost tension... Fluffy73 said it already.

A lot of that "blow by" you see may just be water in the oil that is cooking out and turning to steam as it runs. Engines that sit for long periods of time or are driven short distances in humid weather will build up an alarming amount of moisture in the oil that cooks off as the engine gets hot and steams out the crankcase.

Good observation! Also, the 196 is notorious for blown/leaking head gaskets cracked heads. Could be water from that....Torque that head!!!

What about replacing the PCV? They get gummed up.

Good catch! A faulty PCV valve (assuming it's a 63-65 model)can cause blow-by. Check the hose for blockage as well.

There is a hose coming from the front side cover (on the lower right side) up around the front of the engine to a fitting just under the carb. Near the carb in the rubber part is a short metal piece. That's the PCV valve. You need an in-line valve that is designed to be mounted sideways.

Rock Auto has the correct valve listed.
