Engine is down on compression a little ( 175 fresh to 155 now),
Planning a valve job and rering this fall to early winter.
I need ring recommmdations , it's .030 over 401, built 20 years ago, at that time my mach shop furnished the file to fit rings. Can't remember for sure what they were for, seems like he said 396-402 Chevy.
Maybe something better is now available , it's not a track car just a street driver. I'd like to do it right and c another 20. Years.
It still pulls well to 5500rpm but won't get to 6500 like it used to,
Doesn't use oil or smoke but down on power on the top. I put new valve springs in last summer and that helped but it just ain't the same as it was when it was fresh.
All opinions welcome!
Thanks

There is nothing wrong with re-ringing it with a quick ball hone to break the glaze.

4.195 rings are common and easy to get, that's if it is 4.195....

Saying a 401 is .030 over can be miss leading
since many came out of the factory at +.010 or +.020.
I own one that was +.010 factory fresh.

How much gap do you have now and what gap are you shooting for?
I'll follow these lines a little ways more,

Until I can find what I'm looking for.

The only rings I've found so far, file to fit, 4.280
I'd like .016-.019 top ring, maybe a tad more on second.
I'm open to suggestions!
Won't know for sure till I tear down.
Just trying to have all my options on the table when I get ready to build it.

I suggest you might want to gap the top rings a tad more loose than that.
I pulled the top land off of #2 piston in a 1970 390 gapping at .016 with forged pistons.
Rings expand and close off the gap rather easily.

I learned the hard way to consult with the PISTON manufacturer
as to recommended ring gap.

On the total seal sight they list a 4.125 + .080 that's 4.205 .
I think that would work file fit?
I'll give them a call if nothing else turns up by teardown.
Someone should make .040 over 401 rings , I've found the piston but no rings.
And I'll go .018 on gap to be safe!
Thanks
I've also got a garage buddy that's over mahle motorsports( his crew makes the NASCAR pistols ) he might can get me a ring set .

Have you done a leak down test, are you sure the rings are a problem? Could you have a stretched timing chain altering cam timing and this changing your compression?
