    Posted: Aug/06/2017 at 4:43pm

My '72 Javelin 304 sits very low in the front, so I want to replace the coil springs when I'm rebuilding the front-end.

Moog lists the 3112 as the correct spring for the car, but I'm considering the 3156. Anyone had any experience with these two springs?  The original springs seem very soft, but they're old and tired too, so maybe new springs of the original type is all I need?  I'd like to improve the handling but don't want to destroy the ride either.

I just ordered some KYB gas-adjust shocks too, so maybe that will be enough? The shocks on the car now might be the originals for all I know!

Any opinions or advice welcomed.  Thanks!

There is a standard rate, a v8 with ps and ac, and HD rate.

I assume the one you are looking at is the v8 with ps and ac.

I had that spring type on my 73 and think my 71 as well.

I think it is a good all around spring rate.

Yes, forgot to mention that my car has A/C and PS. Near as I can gather 3156 seems to be the same rate as the A/C spring, though Moog makes no mention of it in the document I was looking at.  Is the 3156 the one you had on your car?

I also see the Moog spring below mentioned in an older thread as being a good choice for the '70 AMX to reduce the nose-high attitude.  Not sure it's going to work for my '72 as it's already too low, but it is another option for us.

Perhaps I should start by measuring the length of the springs that are on the car now and comparing them with the numbers above.

I'll leave the part number questions to the pros... as far as I know there are open questions about springs of recent. Most are happy with Eaton Detroit Spring.

I should have saved my original 71 front springs, as both front and rears were perfect height and stiffness. No body I seen wanted used factory springs, as new was their best option back then, and now. I kept my rears for customising work, that is my last section to complete once done with front end.

Not sure if it's correct, but I read somewhere that Eaton Detroit only makes leaf springs, not coils.

Ah, i have not checked... Though keep on hearing them being the go to choice for some time now, and assumed they would have coils.

I got mine long ago from NAPA, and not sure if they have the same options as when i made my purchase in 2003 or so.

This is great info guys! I'll be rebuilding the front end of my Javelin soon and it's great to find this information so readily available.
Thanks, Tom

Stock Coil Spring Specs

That's some link... I think my HD springs are 401 equivalent 1700 or so.

The 3156 would be what both of my 304 AC automatics had as an equivalent.

Th 3118 would be a wee more stiffer as it is for the 360.

If performance is your needs the 3118 would fit for engine torque and handling.

It will take a few days of good driving to settle the springs as new installation will be a wee taller than stock.

You could compress them over a few nights if you choose, before checking height if wanting to speed up the process.

Also new spring donuts will keep about +.5000" high until they squeeze down after time.

Looks like the 3118 is no longer available. Unhappy

Autozone has the 3156 for $95 per pair.  RockAuto is about $25 cheaper, but freight eats most of that up.

Autozone lists the 3156 as fitting 1970 V8 Javelins and Rebel, 71-74 Matador, and various Gremlins, Concords and Hornets.  Also a Chevy 1 ton pick-up!
