Depending upon tire size I'd say 411 and never look back.

Oh I'm definitely building it to be a driver. That's why I went with the EFI and stuck with the milder cam for now. It's got plenty of torque down low which is fun around town. And with the EFI, you just turn the key and go.

As for tire size like some of you mentioned, I have 235/60R15 all around. That comes out to 26.1".

If I find a set of 3.90s, I'll just split the difference and call it a day!

And I forgot to mention, I'll probably throw in a Powertrax locker just 'cause. I've run them for years and I like them. Plus burnouts are better with two black streaks on the pavement.

With a first gear ratio of 2:74 a 3:73 rear gear it will get up and go in a hurry. My 72 AMX was originally an auto with a 3:15 gear, I swapped to a close ratio T10 (2:23 1st) and a 3:73 rear gear and was pretty happy. About a year later I changed the trans for a wide ratio T10 (2:64 1st) and kept the same rear gears, big difference! tons of fun to drive on the street and with an overdrive you will have the best of both worlds.

Thanks Airdrie AMX. That's a pretty close comparison. I just gotta convince the wife I need to rebuild the axle while I'm doing the 200-4R otherwise I'm gonna only be using 3 out of 4 gears for a while. Maybe I can get some stuff sold off on Craigslist and avoid running this through my "accountant" altogether.

I'm being lazy and have only skimmed over your post so if I've missed some details that's why. I have a 69 Jave with a 350 Chevy and a TH 200-4R with 3.73 gears. Best modification I've done to date and there have been plenty. I'm also running a Truetrac and I replaced the axles with Moser one piece. Glad I did as one axle had been spun at some stage and only the rust was holding it together.
With 265 50 series 15's I'm doing 2250 rpm @ about 65 mph so this combo works great. I'm glad I didn't go with the 3.90's. With this combo and a 3600 stall 9.5" lock converter I get 21 mpg and can still run a 12.3 @ 110 after driving it 400 miles to the track. Tell your wife all the upgrades are to do with safety and you're in! Go for it!

3.73. A 3.54 would be workable, but with a looser stall and bigger cam you might find yourself shifting down more often than you'd like. My 2003 Tundra w/4.7L V-8 and 3.91 gears will drop out of OD on big hills with a bit of a load, or to maintain speed sometimes even with no load, but only on long or steep hills near the lake at my house. On the Interstate it downshifts only when I have a load or I'm in the mountains.

The suggestion of a 3.90 gear does sound like a good compromise. OD ratio is 0.84 instead of the more common 0.80, so it's a bit steeper. With a looser convertor you won't need more gear, so I'd go either with the 3.73 or 3.90, and my personal preference would e the 3.73 for a driver. Hey, the Toyota rear axle is beefy enough but is too wide for a Javelin... it's 66.75" WMS to WMS, Javelin is around 57" for the early models, I think the 71-74 is an inch or so wider? If you want to change axles an Explorer would be a good fit...

Farms, the OD ratio in the 200-4R is actually a pretty high .67. I'd be idling at 60mph with my current rearend.
