Bought a rebuilt twin grip carrier from a member , a couple years ago. It came with the old clutch disc and plates in a mopar plastic parts bag,so I assume it was actually rebuilt. Got it in the car last summer for about 1000 miles of driving.
Seemed to work well. Since then I have moded my car for about another 30-50 HP. This summer when I started hammering on it I noticed that if not on level ground the car would spin one side more than the other. Can this be tightened up without having to go with a locker? My carrier is the style that unbolts in half to rebuild. I had to loosen it up and line up the axel holes before I installed it last year. And yes I added the posi friction modifier . My engine makes around 500 FT LB TQ. I have 3.15 gears, and regular street 255/60/15 tires. Tanks |

You mean like this sort?
There's a definite order to the plates and disks and often people put in the wrong ones in the wrong order. Or, they look like this, and this one was wrong all around - bad plates and disks AND in the wrong order and missing a plate! "rebuilt" means a lot of things - to some it means it's perfect when done, correctly assembled, torqued, correct new parts in the correct places and correct order, to others it means either few or no parts left over and everything fit back in. I subscribe to - and do - the former. It may take a while but it will be right. It can't be "tightened up" but it can be pulled apart and see if the other person knew what they were doing. The TSM also gives a spec so it's pretty simple to test the break-away torque to see if that one has a problem. If it's IN specs, properly assembled with the correct plates, correct disks, in the right order and right orientation then you'll need to decide if you want a different sort of differential.... THIS is wrong - how I found it: Here is the correct order according to AMC in 1970. |

The 1967 TSM shows a different arrangement. Where the '70 TSM shows the flat disc and the dished disc adjacent to each other, the '67 shows the flat disc separated from the dished disc by the dished plate. Does anyone know the history? Did AMC change the arrangement via Tech Bulletin?

They can be stacked either way. The 67 Diag. gives max grip as there are 4 friction surfaces ,great for HP driving. The stack up in the 70 Diag. gives 2 friction surfaces, it still works the same way but is better in ice and snow.
