Looks good Are those ARP Head Bolts ?
If so, may need to make "reliefs" in the header flanges to clear'em. Edited by PHAT69AMX - Jul/07/2007 at 1:14pm |

How did you guess LOL!! Was that you on the phone with rick yesterday? I posted more in the cheers and jeers section, Rick and Jim definately deserve cheers! I am going to plug the Spt 2nd Classic AMX show every chance I get. I went to a couple of the Larz Anderson shows in the late 80's and the quality of the cars was amazing! I am sure this years revival will be great AMC's have become a LOT more popular in the several years since the last show alone. Rick and Jim are an asset to the AMC hobby, very knowledgeable and helpful, very skilled at restoration and engine builds. Edited by 348AMX - Jul/10/2007 at 1:08pm |

Ya that was me and my limited knowledge of engine rebuilding. I'm going to the Endicott Show in Dedham tomorrow with plenty of flyers for any AMC's I see there. This is a huge show have you ever made it over and your in Quincy right?

Phatt69amx, yes, good catch those are the ARP head bolts and Jim did point that out to me about the header flange clearance, looks like I'll be getting a few grinding stones for the dremel to use on the hedmann flanges, shouldnt be too much of a problem to clearance them though. Did you run into that on your 343?
Arnie; where abouts in dedham is the show? I have heard about it many times but never made it out. I am visiting relatives in the area tomorrow but if I have a chance I'll stop by and check out the cars.

If you take the East St. exit off rte.128(after University Ave. exit) going north and stay hard to the right off the exit toward Dedham you will run right into it a mile down the road. When you hit the rotary(not the one off the exit) go half way around and take the first available parking spot and you'll see the Endicott Estate mansion on the right. Don't park on the left side of the street or you'll get a 25.00 ticket. There's well over a 1000 cars there with everything pre 1950 on one side of the estate and the rest on the other side. I think Rick is going and there's lots of vendors.

Yes, I had to grind quite a bit of a "cresent moon" in the header flanges
to clear the ARP head bolts, so much I was a little concerned with sealing.
Motor lasted only ~3 hours, lost a cam lobe, back out and apart.
Just about ready to start re-assembly, and was considering
using the old original AMC head bolts in those lower locations.

I wouldnt worry too much about the seal to the port as long as there is some flange material so that when you torque the flange bolts down there is enough there to sandwich the gasket to the head, you'll still have the entire surface area of the gasket making contact all around the port.
In the 3 or 4 times I have removed and replaced the headers the most important part of the install is to keep torquing the header flange bolts after the car has warmed up and driven several times. Basically the heat cycling of driving the car causes the bolts to loosen a bit and that is what allows exuast gas past the gaskets, and then the gasket will turn brittle from the heat of the gas. If you never give the bolts a chance to loosen you'll never have that problem and the gaskets and seal will last a long time. Usually after 3 or 4 heat cycles from full operating temp you wont be able to tighten the bolts and they keep there torque from then on, so basically once they are tight they'll stay tight.
BTW are your 343 block casting on the side upside down? Mine are, I'll post a pic, just curious.
