what is a good alternate posi choice for my hornet. Can not find a twin grip...the ones that I do find people want way too much and they have to be completely rebuilt.

Whats the budget? amc 20 w/twin grip to fit your Hornet are typically 400-500 range...twin grips in them alone are 300-350...Ford 8.8 I hear people use...I have a 3.15 open rear out of my Gremlin I would sell reasonably...have a twin grip unit I could sell separate to it as well...I have a moser axle 3.31 twin grip I may sell if the price is right...in my Gremlin currently...

There are multiple options thanks to the Jeep guys. Everything from a Spartan locker (around $250) up to an Auburn selectable locker for $735. Detroit limited slip, Auburn limited slip, etc. The Auburn selectable locker would be my choice for a street/strip car. It's a cone-type limited slip, and has an electrically controlled locking function. Both the Detroit and Auburn have cone-type options. Those split the power better.
There are a number of ratcheting locker models. I run a Richmond Powertrax in one of our cars. It's a ratcheting locker, but has synchros for quiet operation. They also make a less expensive Lock-Right option, but you'll hear it make noise on corners. ] Street driving with a locker is pretty seamless under most conditions, except accelerating in corners. And by that, I mean tighter corners mainly. |

Posted a twin grip AMC 20 from a '68 AMX for sale some time ago. Might be an inch narrower than the Hornet though. Also have a standard differential from a '70 Javelin. Could transplant the carrier.

I have a Detroit TrueTrac non slip helical differential which costs about $600. Instead of a clutch it uses helical gears to balance power distribution to the rear wheels. Because there is no clutch it requires no maintenance and always provides the most traction possible. Is it worth dealing with the twin grip? I decided to avoid it and just get the truetrac

I thought the Hornet rear end was narrower than the AMX? Or am I missing something here? |

I don't believe AMC (Dana) ever changed the thread pitch on their 29 spline AMC Model 20 axle shafts. If they did, would it have been a year to year thing, or an AMC vs Jeep thing? I have a used M20 Detroit that came out of a CJ that will go into a 72 Javelin rear at some point, and I'm not anticapating any thread pitch issues (but will be sure to post if I do). I've never heard anyone asked if they wanted Jeep or AMC thread pitch when ordering M20 shafts. Or an early/late thread pitch. AMC M20 29 spline shafts ARE different (bigger) than Mopar/Jeep 8.25" 29 spline shafts, so maybe that's what they were referencing (?)
