Anyone know off hand know the axle ratio for a '66 American Rambler Rogue with a 232 6 cylinder and a Flash O Matic trans? I'm getting ready to install a V8 and possibly a Ranger or S-10 rear axle and want to get an idea on axle ratio options.

My 69 TSM shows 3.15 ratio standard on a 6 cylinder with the automatic and manual trans, 3.54 if it had overdrive. I'd imagine it was the same in 66. Bob tufcj

According to my 66 TSM, 3.31 was standard for the 232, straight drive or auto.
While 2.73 was on the 199 auto, with 3.31 optional. That's surprising. But TSMs aren't always completely correct. There's no way to know for sure unless you crawl underneath and look for the gear count tag hanging on one of the gear cover bolts, because sometimes people did order the optional ratio.

The 232 was sort of a performance option , whereas the 199 was economy all the way. The 2.73 axle would make it work a little harder taking off, but the torque converter would just slip a good bit more and multiply torque. Wouldn't take off real fast but would pull away ok. The 199 might have had a little looser converter, not sure. I'd rather have the 3.31... If you're installing a V-8 and using the trans that came with it you want a rear axle ratio similar to what it came out of. Something of similar weight and size to the American. A Fox body Mustang, or an AMC Hornet or American with V-8 and regular three speed. You can use the American six cylinder axle for quite a while with a modest V-8 as long as you aren't hammering on it constantly or running cheater slicks/big tires. You can only get an 8" wide tire under the wheel wells, any street tire will break loose well before you strain the rear axle much. Just loosen then torque down the axle nuts to 250 ft/lbs. The ends of the axle will stretch slightly over 40-50 years, which loosens torque. May take a lot more than 250 pounds to get it loose, but stuck isn't the same a properly torqued. The AMC 15 is tougher than you think, just don't pound on it with a 350+ hp V-8. If you're sticking with a stock engine closer to 300 hp or less and street tires it will be fine... with properly torqued axles. Torque will be good for 20+ years, but doesn't hurt to do it every 10 years or so.
