64 rambler wagon with a 196 in line 6 auto transmission and enclosed drive shaft. We found a 1976 232 with a 727 torque flite. Can this be swapped in and how much work would it be. (The Dad)

It  can be done but you're going to have to do some modifications to the cross members and fab up a whole new differential to get rid of the torque tube set up.  I believe there are several posts of this forum from members who are doing just what you want to.

the 232 is a little longer than the 196 so you have to move the motor forward or cut the fire wall to get it in as for rear end a model 20 on newer ramblers will bolt in or use other rear ends the trans will fit no problem

This is the boys car. Weighing our options. Priced the parts and you could rebuild 2 of the 232 for what it costs to do a 196 (The Dad)

Where are you sourcing your parts?  Kanter Automotive in NJ has rebuild kits for both the 196 and the 232.  The deluxe kit for the 196 is $1326.48 and the 232 is $1135.25.  That's less than a $200 difference, not twice as much.

i totaly understand what your going for  my 65 i got when i was 16 thats back in the 80's i  put a 232 in it there is some of the issue you will run into by moving the engine forward the water pump come real close to the radiator so your on a budget the 64 crossmember will take the motor mount from the 232 the hole in he fire wall is only  were the head and valve cover go its not move back all that far into the cabine like 1 to 2 inches so you can fab a cover for that hole   and you will have plenty of room up front  as for rear end i have a 8in ford from a mavrick in mine bolted right up no issue or you can look on the forum for a newer rear end for that car there are plenty on here good luck on the project

The original poster says the car has the enclosed driveshaft,  torque tube,  so this is a full size Rambler,  not the American.

The easiest would be to find a 64 to 71 232 which will bolt to the existing bell housing.

Doing a good job of changing out the drive line to the newer bolt pattern will be worth it in the end. It leaves you with lots more options.
