Maybe it's time for someone to make an electric wiper kit for the 64-69 Rambler Americans. One just sold on E-bay for $380. One of the European sites talks about using a Ford Escort set up. Filed that one under urban legend. Has anyone ever done this?

The person who wrote up the Escort conversion did actually do it. It seems to me that someone got a little bit bid happy. I usually see them advertised for less than $200. If you're after a set up, I'd place a want ad in the AMC Rambler Club's ads. I'm sure you can do better than this. Also, the Kenosha show is this weekend. If you can make it there, you will most likely find these parts.

I have a Ford motor in my 63 Classic, but because the motor fits differently than the Hornet, American, and 67+ big car the European guy has installed in (it's on http://amccf.laatikko.org/main.html in the tech section, first article) It was a bit harder. I had to make a new mounting plate and bend it just right. It works well, but obviously isn't factory.

yeah, but they don't work on the Americans!
been there tried that.
I used a freebie XJ motor on mine and it looks factory stock. It's not an easy swap though. I had to use an electric American mounting plate and rework the mounting bosses on the XJ motor to allow them to slide thru the mount plate some. Then it bolted right up.
To get the arm right I took the vacuum arm and slotted it's hole and straightened it out to clear the electric mount plate.
It actualy works near perfect in sweep and fit.
Unfortuneatly if you don't have the electric mount plate and some time to debug it, well, ;lets say it is not a true "bolt in"...Cry

I recently bought a 69 American with vac wipers.  I want to change these out for the electric soon as this will be a daily driver for me.  I read the info about the Ford swap and may try that.  I will have to get a switch but thats no big deal either.  Wrambler, do youhave any pics of your setup?

Thanks,
Scott

Sorry, I don't have anything of the actual install or mods needed to do it.
A general engine compartment shot can be found at Photobucket by searching Wrambler_242. It's under the sub album. I haven't done any updating of photos lately.
I've not been doing much car stuff.

Has anyone ever tried to repair an electric wiper motor?  I took mine off so I could restore it and I'm not sure if I messed it up or not.  It worked just fine before.
I removed it.....sandblasted it and repainted.  The problem is that I think a little glass beading got inside at the wire hole and I may have blown off the fabric insulation on the wires passing through the hole into the motor.  I tried to bench test it but noting workrd and I'm not sure how to do that the right way...( 4 wires ??)   Anyone that can help???

Answering my own post....LOL..  I got the wiper motor humming again!  A little help from Doug at  APD...and I broke down and got out the shop books....Redid the wire insulation....put shrink tubing on...hooked up the RIGHT wires....and away it went....Good thing because ...Doug doesn't have  any......!
