Take a look in the frankenrambler section at “ford 300 six in 58-63 American” ... something like that. The 199/232/258/4.0 is about the same length as the Ford 240/300 (200/250 is a different, shorter block). Have to loose the stock heater and rework the firewall and trans tunnel. The 196 is short. The Ford 200/250 is an easier fit, but will still be a little tight. Have to use early 200 short water pump and fan/ pulleys.

Wittsend, you're right, it's only a question of what the owner wants to do. I'm often not reluctant to make mods.

(BTW, I added a thrust rod, heims each end, between engine and the crossmember under the bell (rear motor mounts). I worked out that fore/aft thrust was what was tearing my motor mounts up, and as an added bonus, the engine can no longer tap the radiator fins.)

You could gain many inches by fully eliminating the belt-driven water pump --  external electric pumps are unfamiliar to lots of people, but I can tell you they're a great solution and in the $100 range. THEN you could get a 232 in there. Maybe a 4.0.

Electric pumps can run full-speed in hot-idle conditions, and at low speed at highway cruise. They can actually save a couple HP best-case.
