I have to rebuild my BW T35 and wanted to ask if i should just pull the transmission only or pull the engine and transmission at the same time. Just not sure if it would be easier to pull both the engine and transmission together or just pull the transmission.

Thanks

ok, thanks haven't done a T35 before do you know if it is easier to pull just the trans or the trans and the converter housing as an assembly? the TSM shows both ways and i am not sure what would be easier.

Thanks again.

I think it is easier to just pull the transmission. I think I've fought with it with panhard bar in place but removing one end and rolling back the differential on its wheels a few inches is quite easy, at least easier than pulling the engine. You also need to remove the six bolts holding the flex plate to the torque converter by rotating the engine to get them accessible. And the obvious like bell housing bolts from the engine, starter and shift linkage.

I forgot about having to remove the lower shock bolts to get the diff to roll back. I use a jack and one by one lower each side of the diff and the spring tension comes off.

IIRC it can be done with diff in place but if in TSM do it that way.

OK i have the trans all disconnected except the top 2 bolts 9/16 on the bell housing cover. Cant seem to get to them. the 2 lager bolts are loose no problem but the top 2.... just cant get the wrench on them squarely, the firewall is in the way. I have jacked up the transmission to get more clearance but still not able to get them loose, lowered the transmission to see if i can get a socket from behind, no luck. before i bend a wrench to get access wanted to ask if anyone had any insight.

Thanks

I have used either (or both) an offset 9/16ths box end from above or a long extension from underneath.  Joe

I usually lower the trans and engine at the back and use about 2' of extensions and a universal joint to get those two stubborn bolts. You might be able to get on them and break loose from the top first, but not enough room to get them out. The head of the engine will rest against the firewall so the engine won't fall out with the trans crossmember out and trans hanging down.
