Recently purchased a 71’ mustard yellow 360/4spd AMX project. It’s a running driving project(sort of,lol) that I’m going to get back to road worthy. Has the center console 4spd, ram air air cleaner, original 15x7 rally wheels, rim blow steering wheel, and tilt column. Build date is 01/71, and I even got the dealer info with the original owners info in it!  http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/893CB6B8-746A-48E8-AB16-1EEF23815B28_zpskjesqryw.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow"> http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/357B776B-B69E-43FD-B7E0-6DF98988DC9F_zps9cc8h6ix.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow"> http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/7132A59C-9EE2-4993-BD44-4F9FE45FC5AF_zpsfuncmkza.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow"> http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/CF29031E-8CA5-477A-9D16-EED78F322944_zpsvsmmhvcy.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow"> http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/A6FF5801-24A5-41FE-9722-04118DC64997_zpsxhm6q9e8.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow"> http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/E8A0710F-9DD6-4B18-BCFC-7AA7AB67534A_zpszn63iyb9.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow"> http://s1339.photobucket.com/user/rockdoktor/media/F253327D-3E9A-4090-ADE7-32E7E3408017_zpsyyrjpkzt.jpeg.html" rel="nofollow">

Got the brakes working properly(plunger rod was to long) and adjusted the strut rods so the tires don’t hit the fenders anymore. It’s going to need shocks for sure, and I’m going to put new leafs, and front coils in as well. Oh, and a carb rebuild and timing adjustment.

Very interesting... I wonder if your console goes under the center pod, as it seems your door panels are later model versions. If the console goes under the center pod... then being a late run on the early production 71, the door panels were the 1st to be changed over. Making it clear that not all late on the early 71 model run Javelins, had all the early items.

To make sure about the door panels... on later panels, both driver and passenger panels have pockets behind the door release handle. Early panels dont.

Looks like outside of no rear windows defroster, non a/c and tinted windows, you have a nice well optioned AMX.

The console does go under the weather eye controls, and there are no pockets on the door panels. The only thing I think was swapped out on the interior was the dash pad because they glued the correct VIN tag over the existing one in the new dash pad. Guess they couldn’t figure out how to drill a rivet out and put a new one in?? Lol.

The real mystery here is the engine. It’s painted red, has not cui cast in the block and the casting number(3198951) says it’s a tel:71-78%20401" rel="nofollow - 71-78 401 ???

Ah, so what looked to be door handle pockets was probably flash shadow. The interior does have a lot of heavy contrast with black and bright highlights.

Some one stated its IH red... oddly enough. There is more than enough under the hood details to keep you busy, which makes the engine paint a bit more owner modified than factory.

I have no casting information on hand, but will post an engine casting link for refernence. Not sure but this IH red paint issue is not new to me, as i vaguely remember an older thread on something similar with service blocks. Just been years now, and the forum I may have heard it from is gone, so i am unable to verify.

I searched our definitive engine casting numbers list... couldnt find it.

Had enough time to find many threads with your engine block number, seems many service blocks are with that number. Even that service block can be packaged to be a 70 390 replacement as a crate engine. So, it happens to be a broadly used part number for service blocks.

Jake - Car's coming a long nicely.

Hopefully you'll get it all sorted out soon, then the only problem will be waiting for some decent weather to take it out.

Though lately that's been a problem...

Hey Steve, thanks. It’s been getting worked on in half hour increments! Lol! The weather has been crappy but, that’s ok by me. Gives me more time to get her ready to cruise!

A 71 360 4speed Javelin/AMX in Mustard is a GREAT car to build!

Does the side of the block say 401?
It could be a service block and still a 360,
 or a swapped in 401.

Are those seats leather?

Nice nice car you have there either way Clap

No, there’s nothing cast on the side of the block. The casting number on the back of the block says it’s a 401 when I looked it up. Seats are vinyl. Thanks, I’m really into this car!!

Stu,

That’s exactly what I’m going to do! Rebuild the suspension, I have the carb getting done, timing, new plugs. The interior is really nice with the exception of the front seat covers. My sons are already asking when we are going for ice cream!!!

Got new leafs, and shocks in the rear. Also threw on some old slapper bars! The tops of the tires were in the wheel wells before. Springs were broken, and it had air shocks on it, that were also busted. Now she sits real nice!!

Now, should I stick with the Minilites, or go to something more muscle car? Like Cragar SS or Indy Mags?

Since minilites are cool on their own, why put anything else on, unless you like 5 spokes or chrome, or you want to modernize with wider rims and tires.

You’re right. I bought the minilites for my cars because they are different and wanted to stand out. Only other wheels for this car that I would consider are rally’s or Machine wheels.

Jake -

It's getting there.

Once you drive it some more, you'll get a better idea if the car needs anything.

Though I think you're right about getting some gauges in there until you sort through
the original cluster :)

Got the 15x7 rally wheels blasted and painted. I’m going to try Cooper Cobras for the first time. 225/60/15 up front, and 275/60/15 out back. And I can use them on both my Javelins.

I just bought the same tires for my 73 Amx however I went with 215 65/15 fronts and 235 65/15 rear.  I wanted to go with bigger size but was worried about fender clearance issues.  Your car looks awesome!!!

Jake - Definitely looks good with those rims and tires.

I think you should save the Minilites for the Blue car :)

I was on the fence about the 235/60 up front but, have seen a lot of guys running them on stock wheels with no issue. I did have them on the 15x8 minilites but, with 4” BS it was a problem so, I went with 225/60 and that worked. Out back I have had no clearance issues with stock or aftermarket wheels and 275’s. On one of my cars I ran a 295/50 out back on a 15x10 with 5.5” BS and man it looked sweet!! With all that meat! Lol! No rubbing issues either.

Been a while since I posted about this car. Was on the fence about selling it(had it on feeBay a few times) but, man it’s to cool and original. So, I put a new Centerforce 10.5” dual friction clutch in, and have been driving it as much as I can.

I also popped a valve cover off and found that the heads are 1970 291c castings. The build date on the door sticker is 1/71’ so I’m assuming the motor is a 10.2:1 compression 295hp version?

Next up, I’m thinking about putting a cam, lifters, and valve springs in it. Looking for a recommendation for a cam?

Also, I’m going to put some 2 chamber mufflers on so I get a little more “muscle” tone!!

Jake -

Car's looking good!

Rims and tires came out great.

Not sure if we'll have any shows this year in NJ with all things considered, but hopefully we'll see
the car out and about at the cruises soon.
